Utopia + American Barbecue Showdown + Camp Cretaceous
First up, Sherin and Alex dive into Utopia, coming to Amazon on September 25th. In this series, a group of strangers find an unpublished sequel to a popular comic that predicts terrible global disasters…but they’re not the only ones after the book. Sherin says: “Nothing and no one is safe or sacred in Utopia. There will be blood and unwilling sacrifice. No one is okay. And all of the tropes and the archetypes that we’ve come to expect are completely dismantled, eroded as if attacked by one of the viruses predicted by the comic at the show’s center. There are no good guys, only people who have the right endgame in mind. And that endgame is brutally imaginative, fantastical, and violent. You can’t stop watching.”
Then our Rioters get into The American Barbecue Showdown, Netflix’s new cooking competition that promises tasty meats and spicy meltdowns—out this Friday. And rounding out this segment is Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (also out Friday), a Netflix animated series that is very difficult to pronounce but has plenty of heart (and scary dinos), making it a great addition to the beloved Jurassic franchise.
Ratched + PEN15
Sherin and Alex must really like y’all because they summoned enough courage to watch Ratched, Ryan Murphy’s new psychological thriller/horror, coming to Netflix on Friday. The series follows Nurse Ratched who infiltrates a psychiatric hospital to wreak some terrible and bloody revenge…but she’s not the only monster on the staff. Sherin says: “It is bizarre and disturbing, a really well made, well written, “awful” show—what I mean by “awful” is the people and the things that happen are soooo rotten…you can’t look away.”
To lighten the mood, Alex tells Sherin about season 2 of PEN15 (out Friday on Hulu), which takes us back into the 13-year-old lives of Maya and Anna as they continue to figure out what it means to be “grown up”.
The Devil All the Time + Secret Society of Second-Born Royals
The Devil All the Time is out now on Netflix, telling a chilling tale of how the inhabitants of Knockemstiff, Ohio are connected through misery, violence, and horror. Sherin says on the film: “Rife with decay and the suppurating evil that lies beneath the hearts of nefarious people—all against the backdrop of a post war mid-America done Gothic style. ‘The Devil All the Time’ is dismal and yet faintly dazzling; somewhat like the hell on earth it portrays.”
Our Rioters then close out the show with a teaser of Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, the new adventure flick that combines superpowers with friendship, love, and royalty—catch it on Disney+ on September 25th!
