Nickelback To Launch Tour With Jerry Cantrell

With a sound that blends ’90s grunge with polished pop, it’s probably safe to assume that Nickelback spent their high school years listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. So, aside from the fact that they’re now labelmates, it’s easy to understand why Nickelback asked Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell to open a bunch of dates for them this summer. The tour will kick off May 13 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the jaunt will pass through many major West Coast, Midwest and Southern cities. During the tour, Nickelback and Cantrell will perform at Country Jam USA… Read more »

Aerosmith Is MTV's Newest 'Icon'

As first tipped here last week, Aerosmith has been selected as the second mtvICON honoree in celebration of its nearly 30-year career. As with last year’s tribute to Janet Jackson, Aerosmith’s songs will be performed by a host of other acts, including Kid Rock, Train, and Pink, who is expected to cover the group’s 1989 No. 4 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Janie’s Got a Gun.” The event will tape April 14 in Los Angeles and air three days later on MTV. Jackson herself will offer a “testimonal” at the outset of the broadcast, while Aerosmith will take the stage for… Read more »

U2 Fired Up for Unforgettable Night at Grammys

Will U2 find what it’s looking for on Wednesday, when it competes for eight Grammy Awards at the music industry’s biggest bash of the year? Or will the Irish rock quartet be rattled by folk musicians, soulful R&B divas and tireless troubadour Bob Dylan? Nothing is ever certain about the Grammys, whose industry voters frequently stun music fans with oddball choices, including last year’s album of the year prize to semi-retired jazz-rock recluses Steely Dan. In the past few years the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, which organizes the event, has tried to improve the awards’ image by… Read more »

Irish band U2, soul divas lead Grammy nominations – Update

Irish rock band U2, which enjoyed a triumphant 2001 playing to sold-out crowds in support of its acclaimed new album, led the list of nominees Friday for the Grammy Awards, the music industry’s top prizes. U2 picked up eight nominations, including the key album, song and record of the year categories, organizers announced at a news conference in Beverly Hills. The group’s four members were “thrilled and really excited, and not at all blase,” U2 manager Paul McGuinness told Reuters from the band’s Dublin base after he tracked them down across Europe to break the good news. “There’s a lot… Read more »

Aerosmith Axe More Shows

Just over a week ago, Beantown bombers Aerosmith canceled a pair of shows in Toronto and Pittsburgh, claiming that vocalist Steven Tyler was road-weary and needed a brief break. They planned to resume the Just Push Play tour on Halloween in Montreal, and while they did indeed play the gig, they again petered out shortly after. Still suffering from a sore throat, Tyler decided to rest his voice for a few nights, causing Aerosmith to nix a November 2 show at the Ervin J. Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio, and postpone a November 4 hometown gig at the FleetCenter in… Read more »

'NSYNC, Michael Jackson, P. Diddy, Mariah Stand United At D.C. Concert

More than 25 artists – from boys (of the Backstreet, ‘NSYNC and O-Town variety) to men (elder statesmen such as Aerosmith, James Brown and Rod Stewart), from vocal queens (Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, Carole King) to the King of Pop – took the stage Sunday at RFK Stadium for the all-day United We Stand – What More Can I Give benefit concert for victims of September’s terrorist attacks. Themes of unity and perseverance permeated every performance, with artists often thanking the sold-out crowd for the message they were sending to the rest of the country – that no matter the… Read more »
