The music industry finally received the holiday gift it had been hoping for this week, as the album charts got a formidable one-two punch from alt-rock superstars Creed and the perennially popular “Now That’s What I Call Music” compilation series. “Weathered” (Wind-Up), Creed’s follow-up to the platinum blockbuster “Human Clay,” sold nearly 900,000 copies its first time out, according to SoundScan data for the week ended Nov. 27. Comic performer Wayne Brady will host the DIY awards show “My VH1 Music Awards ’01,” which will be televised live Dec. 2 on VH1. VH1 instituted the annual interactive kudocast last year. It allows viewers to suggest categories, pick finalists and vote for winners up to the last minute. Mick Jagger, Creed, Sting, Nelly Furtado, Lenny Kravitz, Destiny’s Child and No Doubt are among the acts scheduled to perform at the Shrine Auditorium event. Brady stars in his own skit-and-improv series, “The Wayne Brady Show,” on ABC and also is a cast member on ABC’s “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”

After months of rumor and supposition, the Rolling Stones have announced they will mount a world tour to celebrate their upcoming 40th anniversary. So far, there are no details regarding when the trek will start and whether it will be a full-blown extravaganza or a more intimate affair. Virgin Records vice chairman Nancy Berry, the estranged wife of ousted music executive Ken Berry, Tuesday became the latest casualty of a restructuring at ailing British music company EMI Group Plc, where the couple reigned over rock ‘n’ roll for several years. Alain Levy, who abruptly replaced Ken Berry as chief executive officer of EMI’s recorded music division last week, announced Tuesday that Nancy Berry will leave Virgin immediately after more than two decades at the EMI unit. Less than 24 hours after a marathon gig in New York, music stars including Michael Jackson, the Backstreet Boys, and Mariah Carey kicked off a concert in Washington to help lift the spirits of a nation’s capital rattled by the Sept. 11 attacks and anthrax.
