Is Shock Radio Dead? Imus Joined in Doghouse

It was a good, flatulent, slur-filled and sexist-gag-soaked run, but the bad boys of radio appear to be living on borrowed time. On Tuesday (May 15), XM shock duo Opie and Anthony were slapped with a 30-day suspension for last week’s gag involving a homeless character discussing his desire to sexually assault Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, first lady Laura Bush and the Queen of England. “Nobody in radio thinks they’re a shock jock; they’re entertainers. But if [the genre] isn’t dead, it’s certainly had a storm warning,” said Tom Taylor, editor of Inside Radio, citing last month’s firing of… Read more »

Lopez MTV Special Sprinkled With Bling

New York – Jennifer Lopez didn’t let MTV delve as deeply as they do into the lives of “Newlyweds” Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey or the Osbourne family, but she did let the cameras capture her stressing out over her sparkly New York Fashion Week debut – and one itty-bitty tantrum. “Jennifer Lopez: Beyond the Runway,” the hour-long docu-special that airs Thursday night (10 p.m. EST), is mostly drama-free. Unlike the Osbournes’ screaming matches or a fit by Simpson, most of the conflict is over bling and color. Six months before the show, Lopez worries her designers won’t come up… Read more »

MTV Under Attack by FCC

Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl flash lasted less than three seconds, but the impact continues to ripple through Viacom, the media giant that broadcast the game. Congress, the Federal Communications Commission, right-wing radio commentators and outraged citizens are calling for stricter decency standards – and the artists and executives who make a living from edgy music, performances and videos are in retreat. MTV in particular, which produced the Super Bowl halftime show, is in the midst of a wide-scale re-evaluation of its musical, news and dramatic content. Within a week of the game, MTV – no stranger to criticism, most recently… Read more »

Jackson's Neverland Ranch Raided in Probe

Officers conducting a criminal investigation searched Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch on Tuesday. The purpose of the raid was not disclosed. Court TV cited unidentified sources as saying the search warrant was tied to sexual-abuse allegations brought by a 12- or 13-year-old boy. Sheriff’s officials and the district attorney’s office refused comment. Jackson spokesman Stuart Backerman also refused to comment on any allegations and said neither he nor Jackson knew the details of the investigation. Sixty to 70 investigators from the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices served a warrant as part of an “ongoing criminal investigation,” Sgt. Chris… Read more »

Danny Wood's New Kid

It’s hard to imagine that Danny Wood was ever part of a boy band. We’re talking about a guy who’s muscular enough to keep the Hulk in line. The singer, in fact, has grown up in more ways than one since his days as one of the five members of New Kids on the Block, which scored 13 hits on The Billboard Hot 100 – three of them No. 1s – between 1988 and 1994. Wood endured a painful but ultimately successful custody battle for his son in the late ’90s, as well as the death of his mother from… Read more »

'Osbournes' Is Must-See TV For Incubus, Pink, Box Car Racer

“The Osbournes” have not only captivated you, your bleeping grandma and your bleeping hairdresser, but probably your favorite bleeping rock star as well. The most popular series in MTV history, with nearly 8 million viewers a week, has acquired a particularly loyal audience in perhaps the only people who can truly relate to the madness – other musicians. Incubus, for example, fell so hard for the show they asked their management to record it when they are on the road and send them copies for tour bus screenings. Singer Brandon Boyd said when “The Osbournes” is on, his eyes are… Read more »
