The annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony featured the spirit of 1970s British punk, some anti-war sentiments and probably the loudest noise ever heard at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Dashboard Confessional and Jack Johnson played acoustic, and Beck and Coldplay celebrated Christmas, but otherwise KROQ-FM’s annual Almost Acoustic Christmas was a two-day, 20-act festival all about rocking. Pearl Jam will on Dec. 8 play its first hometown show since October 2001 with a benefit concert at Seattle’s Key Arena. Guitarist Mike McCready told local radio station KNDD today (Oct. 23) that proceeds will aid a variety of charities. He wouldn’t comment on rumors that Queens Of The Stone Age and Audioslave will also be on the bill or that another show may be added. Yes, their hyped off-again, on-again collaboration is back on, and to prove it, they’re releasing an album and planning a tour. After a pre-summer breakdown, the Machine is again operating at full steam. Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk are back in a Los Angeles studio with former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell working on material for an upcoming album, a spokesperson at Epic Records said. The group, which originally called itself Civilian, is now considering using the moniker Audioslave, but there is still no title or release date for the upcoming album. While pre-release bootlegging has long been a detriment (or promotional tool, if you ask some cynics) to hip-hop, it’s not the only genre having a hard time keeping its music under wraps. Demos credited to the unnamed group featuring Chris Cornell and members of Rage Against the Machine have been leaked online. Thirteen tracks purported to be results of the collaboration surfaced on a Web site with an Italian domain on Thursday. With the passing of Layne Staley, those who knew him best remember him as deeply troubled yet immensely talented. Described as a caring person, he made great strides to elevate an underground genre to the mainstream. Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley was found dead in his Seattle home on Friday evening. The King County Medical Examiner positively identified Staley’s body on Saturday (April 20), following an autopsy. Exact time and cause of death are pending, as laboratory results could take several weeks, a spokesperson said. Staley was 34. Police responded to a call to check on a person’s well-being at Staley’s address in Seattle’s University District at 5:41 p.m. PT on Friday, according to the police report.
