Sum 41 Teach The Kids Some New Words – Review

Toronto, Ontario – Oh, Sum 41, how far you’ve come. Despite this show making up for a previously cancelled one, Ajax’s favourite sons were greeted by a full house of hardcore kids, girls in tiny tube tops, drunken frat boys and little pop-punkers firmly protected by a designated parent. One had to wonder whether those parents were routinely covering their poor child’s ears, given all the less-than-all-ages language that was being tossed around. “Sorry Mom, sorry Dad, your kids are going to be learning some new words tonight!” An appropriate warning coming from frontman Deryck Whibley, who would proceed to… Read more »

Sum 41 To Record Mash-Up Album With Ludacris?

Sum 41 drummer Steve Jocz’s mind is racing. He’s just learned that his band will serve as an opening act on Mötley Crüe’s summer-long Carnival of Sin Tour, and as such, he’s trying really hard to think up ways he can match Crüe drummer Tommy Lee’s nearly patented drum-solo heroics (including, but not limited to, being raised in the air and pulling full 360s while bashing the kit). “Man, I don’t know,” he laughed. “I might get my drum tech to push my drum kit forward and then pull it back really fast. Or maybe we’ll put it on wheels… Read more »

Feist And Sum 41 Added To Growing Juno Performers List

Feist Feist, Kalan Porter and Sum 41 have all been added to the list of Canadian musicians who will be performing at this year’s Juno Awards ceremony. Leslie Feist is nominated for three Junos this year after the success of her second solo album, Let It Die. She’s nominated for New Artist Of The Year, Alternative Album Of The Year and Video Of The Year. This won’t be her first shot at a Juno – she’s already been awarded one statue as a part of Broken Social Scene for Best Alternative Album. Sum 41 need no introduction as Canada’s top… Read more »

Sum 41: Survive For The Rocking

Just like everything that surrounds Sum 41, Chuck, the band’s fourth full-length album, has an outlandish story behind it. Last May, the group of 20-somethings were in the Congo, doing the charitable rock star thing by filming a documentary for War Child Canada about the civil war there, which has claimed over three million lives. In the midst of their altruistic act, the band suddenly found themselves in the midst of a serious violent outbreak as gun-fighting and bombs began falling just outside of their hotel. We caught up with Dave “Brown Sound” Baksh to talk a bit about dodging… Read more »

Sum 41 Go Gangsta And Change Tour Dates

With their new disc, Sum 41 have made it clear that they’re more mature and a little more metal. Trading in their pop-punk roots for some crunchier riffs is one thing, but for one performance The Sums are going gangsta and trying their hand at rap. The Ajax foursome have accepted an offer to act as the back up band for Ludacris on Saturday Night Live, but while that may sound pretty exciting, the gig forces the group to shuffle around some shows on their upcoming tour. The result of Sum 41 joining the rapper to perform his single “Get… Read more »

After a couple weeks on Christmas vacation, those Ajax punks are back on the road for another run of their home country. The new and more serious Sum 41 will be touring all around Canada up until the middle of February when they head off to the land of the rising sun. With shows in most markets already on sale, you’d better run to grab tickets fast because the first Toronto date on the tour is already sold out. Goons in the Big Smoke aren’t entirely out of luck though – the Sums have just added another date. In addition… Read more »

Sum 41's New Video Shows The Band Leading Perfect Lives

Sometimes it’s hard to keep it real, and there’s probably no place where that’s more true than in Sum 41’s surreal new video. Their clip for “Pieces,” to be shot by director Brett Simon this weekend, plays with notions of perception and perfection, while also poking fun at the idea of the music video as a commercial. The treatment suggests that Sum 41 have found the “clever” idea they said they were having trouble coming up with. According to the treatment, frontman Deryck Whibley sits in a La-Z-Boy chair in a drably colored apartment while the world outside appears to… Read more »

Sum 41 Release Sensitive 'Pieces'

Throughout their last two albums, Sum 41 have been almost synonymous with either revved-up pop-punk or over-the-top heavy metal. That may all change thanks to their new single, “Pieces.” The Goons, as their fans are affectionately referred, had better brace themselves for associations with things more on the sensitive side of the spectrum, like warm, fuzzy cardigans and online journals. Although it retains the band’s customary big guitars, the melody and subject matter are a lot gentler than signature songs “Over My Head (Better Off Dead),” “Fat Lip” and “In Too Deep.” “We’ve had slow songs before, but we’ve never… Read more »
