Ex-Alice In Chains Members Performing With Damageplan Singer

Forget the stage, it’s been almost a decade since Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Mike Inez – a.k.a. 75 percent of ’90s grunge icons Alice in Chains – have even been in the same room. Sure, they’ve jammed with each other in various permutations since Alice last played a show together (a 1996 taping of MTV’s “Unplugged”), but never all three together. So when they announced that they’d be taking the stage again this month, it had to be for a good reason. “We all saw what happened with the tsunamis in Southeast Asia. It was such an overwhelming tragedy,”… Read more »

Hard Core, Soft Heart

Read the following passage and choose the correct answers. A strong social conscience has inspired tattooed rockers Good Charlotte to join the tsunami relief effort. Good Charlotte may look scary with their pierced lips and tattoos, but they are actually a socially-conscious group. The American band was formed in 1996 by twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden, drummer Chris Wilson, guitarist/keyboardist Billy Martin and bassist Paul Thomas. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1999, Good Charlotte were ready to conquer the world. A non-stop tour schedule saw the band refine their music and develop a passionate fan base inspired… Read more »

Band 50 Foot Wave Copes With Bad Timing

New York – Rock singer Kristin Hersh had something else entirely in mind when she named her new band 50 Foot Wave. Sometimes there’s just not much you can do about bad timing. “It’s either on my part or God’s, I’m not so sure,” Hersh, a heroine of the alternative rock scene with her longtime band Throwing Muses, told The Associated Press in an interview. The band’s first full CD, which is being released in March, was mailed to rock critics about a week before Asia’s devastating tsunami, which killed more than 160,000 people. Hersh named the band after the… Read more »

Franz Ferdinand Come Out Ahead In Brit Nominations

In the hierarchy of awards shows, the U.K.’s Brit Awards are the funnest, craziest and, generally, drunkest of the bunch. The champagne-happy show will take place on February 9 this year, celebrating its 25th anniversary with Franz Ferdinand heading up nominations. With nominations being released today, the Scot-rock band are up for five possible awards, including British Group, Album, Breakthrough Act, Rock Act and Live Act. Muse came in second, with four nods, while American bands Maroon 5 and Scissor Sisters were each nominated three times. Since the Brits organizers don’t divide up their genres quite as much as the… Read more »

Ashlee Attacks Green Day: Backstage At MTV's New Year's

New York – At 7:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, hundreds of thousands of revelers had already begun packing into Times Square, chanting and posing for photos (many would also later don questionable hats). And though it was still early, it was just as hectic high above it all in the MTV studios: a frantic mix of cables, cameras and controlled catastrophes. It was the final rehearsal for MTV’s “Iced Out New Year’s,” and lights had to be arranged, lines rehearsed and the set decorated. The celebrities were all safely in their dressing rooms, tables and tables of sushi had… Read more »

Any Way You Spin It, Music Industry In Trouble – Feature

No wonder pop fans are singing the blues. Radio sounds like a broken record. CD prices are heading off the charts. Labels are out of tune with the digital age. New acts fail to strike a chord with listeners. It’s time to face the music. The $14 billion recording industry, struggling through its first sales slump in a decade, faces challenges on several fronts, not the least of which is a tarnished image in the eyes and ears of fans who feel ripped off by greedy, tone-deaf bean counters. In 2001, album sales dropped 2.8% compared with 2000, the first… Read more »
