U2 Plays a Surprise Show at Brooklyn Park

New York – With the bright lights of lower Manhattan shining on the stage, the band U2 played a surprise outdoor concert Monday in a waterfront park beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Although the MTV-organized show hadn’t been publicly announced or advertised, thousands lined up at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, a riverside park between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and across from the New York skyline. Most people said they heard about the show through word-of-mouth or postings on U2 fans’ Web sites. The concert was for an MTV special called “mtvJAMMED: U2,” set to air Dec. 10. Led by… Read more »

Busted Invades America's… Parking Lots?

In Britain, Busted are headlining stadiums. In America, the pop-punk trio are playing parking lots outside stadiums. So which do they prefer? Prepare to be surprised. “It’s awesome at gigs here, because you kind of have to win the crowd over,” bassist Matt Jay said recently. “Like in England, it’s awesome and stuff, but we could just go ‘Bugger!’ and they would go ‘Yeah!’ Which is awesome, but here, you really have to work hard.” “It’s nice to kind of see the first-time reaction of the crowds again,” guitarist James Bourne added. “It’s like it’s a little déjà vu of… Read more »

Linkin Park's Summer Tour Now Twice As Big

The Projekt Revolution Tour was launched by Linkin Park in 2002 to showcase a diverse range of acts and to turn the band’s fans on to music they might not normally listen to. This year the Revolution will be even more diverse, thanks to the addition of a second stage. Acts confirmed for the second stage so far include Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ghostface, Welsh emo-metal band Funeral for a Friend and rap-metal veterans Downset, with more to be announced. “There might be a couple of up-and-comers, but I think the second stage will really be groups that are on the… Read more »

Linkin Park Avoid Bodily Harm In New Video By Using Anime Stand-Ins

Linkin Park are saving the best for last. The final single from their 2003 album, Meteora, will be their favorite track, “Breaking the Habit.” They dig the tune so much, in fact, that they’re planning to use it as a model when they start working on their next album in October. “Creatively, ‘Breaking the Habit’ is one of the songs we’re most proud of,” guitarist Brad Delson said. “It’s so familiar, but at the same time it’s so foreign to anything we’ve ever done. It really is just a unique animal, and when we approach making the next record, I… Read more »

Apple v Apple, Trademark Dispute Spanning 24 Years

A legal battle between The Beatles’ record label Apple Corps and Apple Computer, which is to be heard in the High Court in London, is the latest move in a trademark dispute spanning 24 years. Their claims to the “Apple” name and logo will be heard in an English court, rather than in the US as requested by the computer firm. The latest clash came after Apple Corps claimed Apple Computer’s iTunes music store – which enables users to download songs to a computer or portable player such as the iPod – breaches an agreement between the two firms. But… Read more »

Fans Mark 10 Years Since Cobain Death

Kurt Cobain and his band, Nirvana, spent only three years in the public eye, and they released only three studio albums. But what he accomplished before committing suicide 10 years ago Monday at age 27 – deciding it was “better to burn out than fade away,” as he quoted Neil Young in his suicide note – was remarkable. Beneath this bridge above the muddy banks of the Wishkah River, a troubled young Cobain would come to escape his unhappy home and the persistent gray drizzle of the Washington coast. Among the cracking concrete supports, he would smoke pot and drink… Read more »

Avril Lavigne's Dark Side

Despite more than ten years difference in age, fellow Canadians Chantal Kreviazuk and Avril Lavigne formed a relationship of mutual respect and sisterhood – and become songwriting partners – after they met last summer. “We became really good friends, and no one knew we were writing together,” says Lavigne. “Every single night for two weeks, we would write a new song. And then I was like, ‘OK, I’m ready to record them.’” The pair co-wrote six songs on Lavigne’s forthcoming album, Under My Skin (due May 25th): “Slipped Away,” “Forgotten,” “Together,” “How Does It Feel,” “He Wasn’t” and “Who Knows.”… Read more »

Linkin Park Caught Unprepared As Fans Flock To 'Lying'

Linkin Park have the kind of problem bands like to have. The ambitious video for Meteora’s scheduled next single is taking longer to finish than expected, and while the band has been waiting patiently, radio programmers and fans have not. Instead, a different song, “Lying From You,” is blowing up and Linkin Park have no video prepared. “I’m not sure if we’re going to do an actual video for it because there’s only so much sh- you can do with one record,” singer Chester Bennington said. “It’s like we can’t make a video for every song on the record, so… Read more »
