Drowning Pool Making A Big Splash At Ozzfest

As their debut album, Sinner, screams up the Billboard albums chart and its first single, “Bodies,” continues on a path toward becoming hard rock’s summer anthem, Drowning Pool seem to have a lock on the title of Ozzfest’s breakout band. Such high expectations, however, haven’t made the Dallas quartet forget what landed it a slot on the tour in the first place. “It’s crazy. It’s hard from my perspective to explain [the position we’re in] because I’m in it,” singer Dave Williams said. “We’re just four jackasses from Texas who love to play music. We love doing what we do… Read more »

Breeders Days Away From Completing New LP

After eight years of rest, rehab and whirlwind recording sessions, the Breeders are finally ready to make another splash in the music world. Former Pixies bassist Kim Deal and her side-project-turned-chart-topping-power-pop-band are just a few days away from completing their first album since 1993’s Last Splash. Tentatively titled Title TK, a clever reference to the journalism symbol meaning “to come,” the album was produced by über-producer Steve Albini in his Electric Audio Recording Studio in Chicago. “The record as a collection covers a lot of territory,” said Albini, who produced and engineered records for both the Pixies and Breeders, as… Read more »

A Flashy Night For Movie Stars

Stars figured they could say and do just about anything at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards on Saturday night. “And I’m gonna,” presenter Halle Berry predicted two hours before she took the stage with her Swordfish co-stars, John Travolta and Hugh Jackman. Playing off the rumor (which she later denied) that she received an extra $500,000 to show her breasts in her upcoming action movie, Berry encouraged the two men to show a body part. Then she patted their buns as they playfully unbuttoned their jackets in striptease fashion. It was all part of the fun that took place at… Read more »

Stones' Svengali Recounts Street Fighting Days

Long before gun-toting rap stars roamed America, the first manager of the Rolling Stones was terrorizing “Swinging” London, throwing errant journalists out of windows and others off bridges. Accompanied by a thuggish bodyguard, teenage pop Svengali Andrew Loog Oldham was said to be quite the rogue 40 years ago: Sporting a cape, he would careen around the city in his Mini Cooper, speakers blaring from the roof of the tiny car. This is not all completely true – especially the bit about the cape – but the anecdotes and rumors metamorphosed into “facts” over the years, a consequence of the… Read more »
