Phish Bid New York Fond Adieu At Farewell Shows

Whisps of fake fog spilled from the stage and dissipated into a light breeze rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean as 7,000 satisfied fans shuffled toward Nathan’s Hot Dogs, the Wonder Wheel or the D-train. So ended the beginning of the end for Phish, who performed Thursday and Friday at Coney Island’s baseball stadium beside the sea, KeySpan Park. The shows launched the band’s farewell tour, which will culminate August 14 and 15 at a festival in Phish’s home state of Vermont. But fans didn’t let any sadness show at these gigs: Even when the sky opened up and drenched… Read more »

Ray Charles dies at 73

Ray Charles, the Grammy-winning crooner who blended gospel and blues in such crowd-pleasers as “What’d I Say” and ballads like “Georgia on My Mind,” died Thursday, a spokesman said. He was 73. Charles died at his Beverly Hills home surrounded by family and friends, said spokesman Jerry Digney. Charles’ last public appearance was alongside Clint Eastwood on April 30, when the city of Los Angeles designated the singer’s studios, built 40 years ago in central Los Angeles, as a historic landmark. Blind by age 7 and an orphan at 15, Charles spent his life shattering any notion of musical boundaries… Read more »

Australia's Vines, Mentally Exhausted, Scrap Tour

Australian rock band the Vines, who have gained a reputation for delivering erratic performances, have backed out of their planned support spot on Incubus’ summer North American tour, citing “mental and physical exhaustion.” The band was thrust into disarray following a recent performance for a Sydney radio station, when bassist Patrick Matthews walked out following the first song. A full show the next evening was promptly canceled. “The decision has been made to take a break to deal with the mental and physical exhaustion issues the band currently face(s),” the group said in a statement. “The Vines have not broken… Read more »

Warner Music Looks to Slash Artist Roster

The newly private Warner Music Group, having significantly reduced its worldwide staff, is now turning its cost-cutting efforts toward its artists. As part of the integration of Atlantic and Elektra into one label, Warner Music Group’s new management team is looking at the artist roster with the goal of paring it “from 180 to below 100,” says WMG U.S. Recorded Music chairman/CEO Lyor Cohen. The company is attempting to get the roster down to a size that’s in proportion with the organization and respectful of the acts remaining on the roster, Cohen says. It’s unclear which specific artists might get… Read more »

Christina Calls off Tour

The Dirrty girl’s summer tour is a wash. Christina Aguilera has canceled all upcoming performances on the advice of her doctor, due to a set of stripped pipes sustained in the studio. Medical types advised the “Beautiful” singer to rest and give her voice time to recover-and, apparently, words can keep her down. “I am extremely disappointed to have to cancel this tour,” Aguilera said in a statement. “I was looking forward to being on the road again and spending time with my fans.” The 29-date North American tour was set to kick off May 13 in Auburn, Washington with… Read more »

Avril Confirms That Jesse's Out And Craig Is In

When news broke earlier this week that Avril Lavigne’s rhythm guitarist Jesse Colburn had been ousted from the band, Lavigne herself was caught a little off guard that the news caused such a commotion. Seeing as Colburn is heavily rumoured to be Avril’s ex-boyfriend, the switch-up in Lavigne’s band has certainly got the gossip mill churning. Lavigne isn’t about to throw more fuel on that fire by elaborating on Colburn’s reasons for leaving (the official party line is that he left to pursue other projects), but she did confirm that he is no longer in the band. “No,” Lavigne responded… Read more »

FTC Shuts 'American Idol' Phone Scam

Federal regulators settled a case Thursday with companies that took advantage of thousands of “American Idol” fans trying to vote for their favorite contestants on the TV show. According to the Federal Trade Commission, three Utah-based companies bought dozens of phone numbers very similar to the toll-free numbers that “Idol” fans call to place their votes. Viewers who misdialed and got one of the numbers were directed to dial a 900-number to place their vote. A message on the 900-number then gave the correct toll-free number to call. The FTC said about 25,000 consumers were charged up to $3 per… Read more »

Rhone had been at Warner for at least a decade. Azzoli and Shapiro had also been with the company for several years.… Read more »

Caffeine-Powered Finger Eleven Mellow Out For 'One Thing'

Sometimes your big break comes easier than you imagined it would. Just ask the members of Finger Eleven. After six years, the Canadian quintet is finally getting its just desserts with “One Thing,” the second single from the band’s self-titled third album. While predecessor “Good Times,” a quick-tempo confrontational rocker, didn’t make much of an impact, “One Thing” is a gentle acoustic ballad that arrived with surprisingly little effort. “It came out pretty easily,” singer Scott Anderson said. “It’s the result of [guitarist] James [Black] and I going to a cottage with an acoustic guitar to try to finish up… Read more »
