At the most recent Bionic show in Toronto, I had the pleasure of chatting with guitarist Ian Blurton for a few minutes. Not only does Blurton wail with Bionic, but he’s also got producer credit on the upcoming Weakerthans album, Reconstruction Site. Assembling a promotional campaign for a veteran band that has been out of the spotlight is a tough enough feat. But Capitol Records is facing the daunting task of reintroducing a group that hasn’t released a new album in 13 years. It was as if the tattooed hand of a punk rock god reached down and anointed Andrew W.K. After months of auditions and wavering between top contenders, the group known simply as the Project – featuring ex-Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum – has finally decided upon a singer. Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland officially gets the coveted singer spot, according to the Project’s spokesperson. Scott Weiland pleaded not guilty to charges of drug possession Monday (June 2), and offered to put himself in rehab before his next court date. The Stone Temple Pilots singer had been arrested last month in Burbank after police stopped him for a minor traffic violation and found what they believed to be drugs. He was charged with two felony counts of possession of heroin and cocaine. Jennifer Lynn Sires, a 29-year-old woman traveling with him whom he reportedly met in rehab, was also arrested on the same illegal substance possession charges. Her arraignment is on Tuesday. Headbanging riffs prevail on Marilyn Manson’s “The Golden Age of Grotesque.” “Use Your Fist and Not Your Mouth,” and “mOBSCENE,” with its taunting cheerleader chants, carry a heavyweight sound of bludgeoning rhythms and chainsaw guitars. Perhaps most engaging is the title track, a trawling hummer of a bummer; it’s melodramatic vaudevillian style recalls Pink Floyd’s personal crises of “The Wall” and fades with a chorus similar to Iggy Pop’s “Passenger” as it celebrates an age where the profane is profitable.

The White Stripes’ much-heralded new album “Elephant” (XL Recordings) stampeded the U.K. chart on Sunday, going straight to No. 1, while “Make Luv” by Room 5 featuring Oliver Cheatham (Positiva) retained its place at the top of the singles chart. Returning from a two-year hiatus, the Vermont jam band with the obsessive fan base played a long, high-energy show at Madison Square Garden on New Year’s Eve before a raucous crowd, with some fans paying more than $1,000 to get into the sold-out concert.
