Beyond File-Sharing, a Nation of Copiers

The week the music industry brought suit against 261 users of Internet file-sharing services, Donald L. McCabe was in St. Louis to talk about a different form of digital copying. Mr. McCabe, a Rutgers University professor, has made a career of studying the cheating of American high school and college students. His most recent study found that cheating was spreading almost like file-sharing. Of more than 18,000 students surveyed, 38 percent said they had lifted material from the Internet for use in papers in the last year. More striking to Mr. McCabe, 44 percent said they considered this sampling no… Read more »

Virtual Delivery Seen as Death to Discs

Hollywood will win the war against illegal downloading but the battlefield will be littered with casualties, including the DVD and CD formats as physical means of distributing video and audio, according to a Forrester Research study released Tuesday. The study predicts that in five years, CDs and DVDs will start to go the way of the vinyl LP as 33% of music sales and 19% of home video revenue shifts to streaming and downloading. Part of that stems from the continued proliferation of illegal file trading, which has caused an estimated $700 million of lost CD sales since 1999. But… Read more »

A Perfect Circle Admit They're 'Weak And Powerless' On New Single

One reason A Perfect Circle resonate with such power is because the bandmembers are dedicated to their art – whether it’s catchy and commercial or sprawling and inaccessible to the mainstream. They immerse themselves in their songs, which are as much a part of themselves as a reflection of their personalities. And they present their vision in a striking and unconventional manner, singing from behind a screen, performing in near darkness and greeting the media with complete indifference. The band’s new album, The Thirteenth Step, due September 16, is textural, evocative and moody – metallic art-rock for the clinically depressed.… Read more »

A Perfect Circle Illuminate The Darkness With Flawless New York Show – Review

With little pomp and no showboating, A Perfect Circle were all about the music in the first headlining performance in support of their upcoming album, Thirteenth Step. That shouldn’t surprise any APC fans or those familiar with shows by singer Maynard James Keenan’s other band, Tool. Never once did he holler, “Hello, New York” – in fact, he jokingly made a reference to New Jersey – nor did he ask if fans were ready to rock. It didn’t matter. He obviously was. And so were his bandmates, who took the stage in formation: guitarist Billy Howerdel at the front of… Read more »

A Perfect Circle Take New Step

Maynard James Keenan will keep Tool in the shed for at least another few months, as the oddball frontman’s other band A Perfect Circle releases Thirteenth Step on September 16th. Since the release of its debut album, Mer de Noms, three years ago, A Perfect Circle has had a few chairs vacated and filled. Out are guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen and bassist Paz Lenchantin (who joined Billy Corgan’s new band, Zwan). And joining Keenan, guitarist Billy Howerdel and drummer Josh Freese is Jeordie White, who formerly recorded as “Twiggy Ramirez” for Marilyn Manson. A Perfect Circle have lined up a… Read more »

No Doubt Drummer A Father, Squeezes In Bono Tribute Gig After Birth

No Doubt drummer Adrian Young became a father Saturday (February 9) when his wife gave birth to Mason James Young in a Southern California hospital. The visibly elated father arrived to perform with his band at the Love Rocks event honoring U2’s Bono in Hollywood on Thursday (February 14.) Young, wearing hospital garb, said, “Well, I’m still in my scrubs ’cause I haven’t gone home yet. The baby’s still in the hospital. I take him home after the gig’s over. It happened on Saturday but they’ve been giving him antibiotics and now we’re taking him home tonight.” The reason for… Read more »
