Linkin Park Finish Apocalyptic Album

On May 15, Linkin Park will unleash Minutes to Midnight, their much-anticipated follow-up to 2003’s Meteora. And though the album has been in the works for nearly four years now, it’s actually based on a concept that’s much, much older – and much, much creepier than you might expect. “The title is a reference to the Doomsday Clock, which was created by these scientists at the University of Chicago after the United States dropped the atomic bomb on Japan to end World War II,” Linkin Park co-frontman Chester Bennington explained. “Given the idea that mankind now had this ultimate destructive… Read more »

Travis Barker Gets Down with Rap While Arm Heals

For (+44) drummer Travis Barker, it seems what slows down one of his passions – most recently, his still-broken arm – only makes him stronger at others. Barker busted his arm in September during the band’s video shoot for single “When Your Heart Stops Beating” and subsequently had to back out of touring duties. But he’s passed the time picking up a couple of production credits on upcoming albums by rappers Paul Wall and Juelz Santana. “[My broken arm] kind of left me to where it’s the only thing I can do right now, honestly,” Barker said of making beats.… Read more »

Rubin Turns To Linkin Park, Weezer After Grammys

Rick Rubin never having won the Producer of the Year Grammy was the musical equivalent of Martin Scorsese never having won the best-director Oscar. And on Sunday, two weeks before Scorsese is expected to finally get his prize, Rubin was at last honored – and then honored again and again and again. In the end, Rubin walked away (not literally – he did not attend) with five Grammys: for Producer of the Year; Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year for the Dixie Chicks’ Taking the Long Way; Record of the Year for the Chicks’ “Not Ready… Read more »

Relient K Draw Fans in Christian, Mainstream Markets

After toiling away for seven years and building a rabid fan base in the Christian market, Relient K broke through to mainstream success with the 2004 release “Mmhmm.” The band’s career illustrates that sometimes the least calculated of efforts reap the most rewards. “Our band’s philosophy is we do what we do and whatever happens around us, happens around us,” lead vocalist/songwriter Matt Thiessen says. “We write the songs we want to write and try to have fun with the band. It’s not like we went into the record saying, ‘This would be a great radio song.”‘ Relient K’s fifth… Read more »

Apple, Beatles Settle Trademark Squabble

Apple Inc. has settled its long-running trademark dispute with The Beatles’ company Apple Corps Ltd., in a deal which could pave the way for the band’s songs to be played on Apple’s iTunes music store. In a statement, the companies said Apple Inc. would now own all the trademarks related to “Apple” and would license certain trademarks back to Apple Corps for continued use. The trademark lawsuit between the companies will also end with each party bearing its own legal costs. “We love the Beatles, and it has been painful being at odds with them over these trademarks,” Apple Chief… Read more »

New Linkin Park Album 'Not Nu-Metal'

Linkin Park are to release their third studio album ahead of a headline slot at this year’s Download Festival. The as-yet-untitled-set is confirmed for release on April 30th, with the U.S. rockers also preparing a single to hit a week prior, on April 23rd. Co-produced by Rick Rubin and the band’s co-lead vocalist Mike Shinoda (who toured his side project throughout 2006), the set is described as ‘unpredictable’ by the band’s other singer Chester Bennington. “[It’s] dark and spooky, poppy and very melodic…” he says. “We’re straying away from a lot of the predictable sounds we’ve had in the past.… Read more »

Beastie Boys to Embark on Equality Drive

Russell Simmons’ drive to make people from different backgrounds more racially aware is picking up steam – with Brooklyn act the Beastie Boys next on his list of star speakers. The rap mogul wants the veteran three-piece act to help sway the Jewish vote, in the same way Jay-Z’s involvement has established a voice in predominantly black New York districts. “I am looking for Beastie Boys to join other prominent Jews in the entertainment industry to film a PSA (Public Service Announcement) confronting racism, (Specifically) Islamophobia,” He tells AllHipHop.com. “The only way to end the madness is to have people… Read more »

Injury Forces Barker off +44 tour

Drummer Travis Barker is leaving a European tour with his new band +44 because of an unhealed fractured arm. The former Blink-182 drummer had been on tour despite a fractured right arm he suffered Sept. 9 while filming a video, according to Interscope Records. Barker, 31, will return to Los Angeles to be treated. The band, fronted by former Blink-182 singer and bassist Mark Hoppus, has not announced a replacement drummer. A message left at Interscope Records was not immediately returned Sunday. Barker starred in the MTV reality series “Meet the Barkers” with former Miss USA Shanna Moakler, to whom… Read more »

Australian concert flag ban sparks anger

Fears of race clashes on Monday led organizers of Australia’s biggest outdoor rock concert to bar fans from carrying the national flag, sparking a furious reaction from the country’s prime minister and war veterans. After fights between ethnic Croatian and Serbian fans outside the Australian Open tennis tournament last week and 2005 race clashes on Sydney’s beaches, Big Day Out concert organizers said Australia’s flag was a “gang color” which could incite hatred. “It was racism disguised as patriotism and I’m not going to tolerate it,” event producer Ken West told Australian newspapers. The concert Web site said the flag… Read more »
