Tweaked "American Idol" returns with new judge

American Idol returns for its eighth season on Tuesday with a new judge, a better showcase for talented singers and a wary eye on its status as America’s most-watched television show. The five-month search for a new star kicks off with a two-night, four-hour premiere featuring the familiar blend of hundreds of hopeful, and sometimes hopeless, contestants auditioning in cities across the nation. But producers have tweaked the formula to keep viewers tuning in en masse after last year, when the numbers of “American Idol” faithful slipped to about 28.1 million per episode from an average 30.8 million in 2006.… Read more »

Jonas Brothers aim to record with Kanye West

The Jonas Brothers want to work with Elvis –the  wannabe Elvis, that is. Nick Jonas revealed at yesterday’s American Music Awards that he and his singing siblings think they may have a future in hip-hop. “We think Kanye [West]’s new record sounded really cool, so that’s someone,”  Nick said when asked who they’d like to team up with. But  Nick doesn’t want to rush into things. “Usually it’s cool to get to know somebody as a friend before forming a work relationship with them,” he said. But if Kanye  doesn’t pan out, there’s someone else waiting in the wings. R&B… Read more »

Jonas Brothers: No Mandates Against Fan Dates

Not that their tween legions needed any more fuel for their obsession, but the Jonas Brothers have just come up with a foolproof way of ensuring the loyalty of their minions: promising to marry their biggest fans. Of course, Kevin, Joe and Nick (who happens to be celebrating his Sweet 16 today) no doubt meant the biggest fans of their respective, private, individual selves–alas, the finer points of semantics have never been the forte of the young and hormonal. “The answer is YES,” the brothers collectively wrote in a post on their MySpace page in answer to fan-generated questions of… Read more »

Kanye West ends VMA boycott

A year after vowing never to perform on the MTV Video Music Awards again, hip-hop star Kanye West will close the show’s 25th annual ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday, joining a lineup that includes Christina Aguilera and the Jonas Brothers, organizers said. The outspoken rapper was upset by his treatment at last year’s show, when his performance was relegated to a small stage in the Las Vegas venue. West also failed to win any prizes, and accused the music cable network of exploiting Britney Spears, who inadvertently stole the show by badly lip-synching and dancing to her new tune. The… Read more »

Barenaked Singer Escapes Plane Crash

This just hasn’t been the Barenaked Ladies’ year. First, cofounder Steven Page gets busted for drugs. Now this. BNL’s lead singer and principal songwriter, Ed Robertson, and three others narrowly averted disaster Sunday, walking away unscathed from a float-plane crash near Bancroft, Ontario. According to the Intelligencer of Belleville, Ontario, Robertson was at the controls of a Cessna 206 when a gust of wind caused the plane to stall, forcing him to put down in a wooded area near the resort of Baptiste Lake. “Everyone is fine and that is the important thing,” Barenaked Ladies rep Adam Smith told the… Read more »

The Jonas Brothers invade NYC

Quiet time is a rarity for the Jonas Brothers these days. Following a special performance for more than 500 screaming tween and teen girls at Apple’s downtown Manhattan store on Tuesday night, the brothers – Kevin, 20, Joe, 18, and Nick, 15 – huddled in a stairwell, trying to find a quiet space to conduct an interview with The Associated Press. Good luck with that. Even as they spoke, their words were almost drowned out by deafening, doglike shrieks from girls still trying to find a way to get at their idols, who have set off a boy-band pop craze… Read more »

Zac Efron's Bod Heats Up the Chemistry

Watch your back, Vanessa Hudgens! Your High School Musical costar Monique Coleman wants to get sweaty with your boy, Zac Efron. Hudgens actually has nothing to worry about. Coleman just thinks it would be a hoot if she and newly fitness-buffed Efron worked out together, because she’s about to start training as a relay runner for the upcoming Malibu Triathlon, which raises money for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “That would be so cute,” Coleman told me today. “I keep seeing all those [paparazzi] shots of Zac, and I’m like, Look at him being all grown up.” Coleman and the rest… Read more »

The Jonas Brothers Want to Dress You!

Add the Jonas Brothers to the list of musicians who want their own fashion line. “I’m not saying we’re the best designers in the world, but being able to make what we like, that would be so cool,” oldest sibling Kevin, 20, told me the other day in Hollywood, where the trio was appearing on FNMTV Premieres. “We love dressing up and putting on different kinds of clothes.” And the Jonas empire doesn’t end there. Nick, 15, says a Christmas album is a definite possibility. “We wrote a holiday song, “Girl of My Dreams,” and sang it at the Disney… Read more »
