EMI To License Catalog To Pressplay


Pressplay and EMI today announced that the EMI has agreed to license music from its extensive catalog to the online music company comprised of Sony and Universal. Pressplay currently expects to launch its consumer music subscription service later this fall. EMI is one of the backers of MusicNet, which also expects to launch a subscription service this fall. MusicNet is the digital music distribution company formed by RealNetworks, AOL Time Warner, Bertelsmann, and EMI Group. MusicNet Completes Platform For Distribution Partners, Announces Limited Public Preview


MusicNet announced today the launch of its technology platform, which is being delivered to distribution partners, AOL and RealNetworks, for incorporation into their systems for future consumer offerings. Napster, Publishers Reach Preliminary Settlement


American songwriters and music publishers have reached preliminary agreement with the on-line file sharing service Napster to settle the class-action lawsuit currently pending in federal court in California. The agreement includes terms under which the songwriters and music publishers will license their music to Napster’s new membership-based service. Clear Channel Circulates List Of Banned Songs


Clear Channel has identified 150 songs that are considered to be “lyrically inappropriate” for airplay in the wake of the terror attacks carried out in the U.S. on Tuesday, September 11. A Clear Channel spokesperson has confirmed that the list has been circulated among its stations across the country. The lyrical content targeted by the list includes any references to death, flying, September, or general destruction. While the U.S. financial markets suffered a broad sell-off Monday in the wake of last week’s terrorist attacks, a number of sectors of the economy saw incremental gains at the closing bell. XM Reschedules Official Launch Of Satellite Radio For Sept. 25


XM Satellite Radio today received from the Federal Communications Commission nationwide terrestrial network authority necessary to commence commercial operations and has rescheduled launch of the first U.S. digital satellite radio service for Tuesday, Sept. 25. Users Not Ready To Pay For Web Music


Consumers have not accepted purchasing and downloading music via the Web and are not likely to change with the new services being developed by the recording industry, according to a survey by research firm GartnerG2 on Wednesday. The survey of 4000 adults on the Internet found that nearly 50 percent of those polled listened to CDs on their PCs; whereas only 25 percent listen to music downloads from the Internet on their PCs.
