Jewel, R.E.M. Offer Passion Over Politics At AIDS Benefit

“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Michael Stipe asked the crowd soon after R.E.M. took the stage Thursday night at the venerable venue. “Practice,” the crowd blurted in unison. “Well, we didn’t,” Stipe responded. “So if you hear a bum note or something that doesn’t sound right, I urge you to sing louder in your head.” The tour-shy Athens rockers and granola-pop folkie Jewel were among those on hand for an evening of spirited entertainment at “You Gotta Have Friends: Partners in the Fight Against AIDS,” a benefit for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. Fu Manchu Bask In Kind Buzz At L.A. Tour Opener

If Fu Manchu were hoping to find a few friendly faces when unveiling new material Tuesday night at the Troubadour, the stoner rock outfit was undoubtedly stoked by the warm welcome it found. By the time the band hit the stage at 11 p.m. to kick off its U.S. tour, the club was packed and the crowd was by all indications “into it,” if otherwise meditatively subdued in their devotion. Those in attendance, including former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, were clearly devotees of the Fu, nodding their heads along to the band’s low-end celebrations of surfing, skating, B-movies… Read more »

Rock 'n' roll's Stone Pony may escape wrecking ball

The Stone Pony, a mecca for fans of Jersey shore rock ‘n’ roll, appears to have survived a brush with destruction, officials said on Thursday. The dilapidated nightclub, a musical home to such legends as Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith, will be incorporated into a tentative plan to help revitalize the decayed beachfront of Asbury Park, New Jersey, they said. Original plans called for the Stone Pony – the best-known place to catch an impromptu Springsteen appearance – to be demolished or moved, but a rollicking campaign by devoted patrons ensued to preserve the squat, grimy building now sitting amid… Read more »

Irish band U2, soul divas lead Grammy nominations – Update

Irish rock band U2, which enjoyed a triumphant 2001 playing to sold-out crowds in support of its acclaimed new album, led the list of nominees Friday for the Grammy Awards, the music industry’s top prizes. U2 picked up eight nominations, including the key album, song and record of the year categories, organizers announced at a news conference in Beverly Hills. The group’s four members were “thrilled and really excited, and not at all blase,” U2 manager Paul McGuinness told Reuters from the band’s Dublin base after he tracked them down across Europe to break the good news. “There’s a lot… Read more »

Online Music Services Don't Impress Insiders

Welcome to 2002: The Year of the Living Dangerously. For the record labels that is. The major labels took their sweet time and finally rolled out Pressplay and MusicNet, online music subscription services, as 2001 came to an end. The reaction thus far has been, in a word, blah. And the reaction I am talking about is not coming from consumers, it is coming from inside the industry. “The services are useless right now,” one major label executive told me. “Unless we crush file-swapping, we’ll fail online. And if that happens the industry will have to rethink its strategy beginning… Read more »

Rolling Stone magazine pays tribute to Beatle George

Eighteen years after Rolling Stone magazine panned his new “Dark Horse” album as “transcendental mediocrity,” George Harrison was still upset about the review. A scheduled 1992 photo shoot for Rolling Stone’s 25th anniversary issue almost did not go ahead because of bad feelings, chief photographer Mark Seliger recalls in a special edition devoted solely to the late former Beatle. But Rolling Stone reentered Harrison’s good graces when Seliger brought along some ukuleles, on the advice of Tom Petty. Harrison picked up one of the instruments and played Hawaiian ballads for 20 minutes, while Seliger clicked away. A previously unpublished photo… Read more »

Beyonce Records Song Written By Mike Myers For 'Powers' Flick

After tackling the airwaves this year with “Bootylicious,” the Destiny’s Child singer has moved on to sampling K.C. and the Sunshine Band’s 1976 disco hit “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” on a song for the next Austin Powers movie, “Austin Powers in Goldmember.” Beyoncé plays the lead female role, Foxy Cleopatra, opposite Mike Myers, who wrote the “Booty”-sampling song, titled “Hey, Goldmember.” “It’s not a serious song – it’s really funny and crazy” Beyoncé said recently at a Los Angeles recording studio where she was working on it. “It is actually [in the movie] the first time you see… Read more »

No sign of Beatle Harrison's ashes in Indian city

Indian officials on Wednesday played down reports Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s ashes were to be immersed in India’s holy Ganges river. “I think the whole story is a creation of the media,” Varanasi city police Inspector-General Vikram Singh told Reuters. “You are running a wild goose chase.” Harrison’s last rites have been shrouded in secrecy since a Hare Krishna official said on Monday the musician’s family was expected to visit the holy city of Varanasi for the ritual symbolizing the journey of his soul to eternal consciousness. “As far as the administration is concerned, I don’t think there’s anything happening… Read more »
