This past weekend brought fans of the four boys from Dublin to Toronto for InTO The Heart, a U2 Fan Fest. The conference brought U2 expert B.P. Fallon to town to share his insight on Bono and the gang. Fallon has a rich rock history – he’s been on tour with Led Zeppelin, his Death Disco club nights attract the brightest of stars, he was U2’s DJ on the ZooTV tour and he’s perhaps the world’s ultimate authority on the world’s self-proclaimed biggest band. And although an international fan conference is something that few bands can boast, Fallon says this… Read more »
It looks like Jack White’s broken finger has healed at least well enough to throw punches at other garage rockers. The White Stripes frontman was involved in a brawl with Von Bondies singer/guitarist Jason Stollsteimer Saturday night in Detroit’s Magic Stick club, according to police reports. Stollsteimer, who suffered a bloody nose and bruising to his right eye, was treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital and released. White sustained cuts to his left hand. The Von Bondies singer told police that White had tried to speak with him in the club, which was hosting a record release party for alt-country rockers… Read more »
A lawyer representing 16 plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed in the wake of the Station nightclub fire that killed 99 people in February has dropped Great White from his list of defendants. Brian Cunha, the first attorney to file suit following the February 20 disaster, said he decided not to target Great White because five of his clients are friends of the bandmembers and requested they not be named, and more importantly, his clients would have nothing to gain financially from suing Great White, whose pockets are not terribly deep. “They have no assets, so it would be a Pyrrhic… Read more »
Though some artists have been known to exaggerate a broken heart for the sake of art, the All-American Rejects have no need for such artistic license. For them, the truth is often sadder than fiction. “There’s rarely a happy ending in any of my songs,” singer/bassist Tyson Ritter said. “As far as the guy getting the girl in the end, it’s all fictitious. It’s all made up in my mind, I guess; all wishful thinking.” Such weighty fare fills the self-titled full-length debut by Ritter, 18, and multi-instrumentalist Nick Wheeler, 20. Two kids from Stillwater, Oklahoma, shouldn’t know so much… Read more »
The White Stripes will hit the dead leaves and dirty ground of New York’s Union Square on Tuesday to play a free show. The noon performance is the latest in a series of guerilla concerts staged by Nissan. Train played the first gig, in St. Louis on September 17, followed by Pink in Chicago, Eve in Philadelphia, Dashboard Confessional in Boston, Enrique Iglesias in Brooklyn and Cheap Trick in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Additional free shows will continue in other cities, a spokesperson for the concert series said. After Tuesday’s free show, Detroit duo Jack and Meg White only have two… Read more »
Detroit blooze duo the White Stripes have chosen “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” as the third single from their latest album, White Blood Cells. The tale of woe, composed of sluggish verses that explode into a rough-hewn, feedback-tweaked chorus, follows previous cuts “Hotel Yorba” and “Fell in Love With a Girl.” A video for the song will be shot by Michel Gondry, according to a spokesperson for V2 Records. Gondry, who has directed groundbreaking clips for Björk, Cibo Matto and Radiohead, was the visual artist responsible for the living Lego style of the Stripes’ “Fell in Love With a… Read more »
Remember how psyched you were as a kid to build a little car or a castle out of Lego pieces? Bet you never fashioned a fully functioning punk-rock duo and a kaleidoscopic world where they could swim, ride bikes and whale on the drums, though, did you? Don’t feel bad. You probably never got that sophisticated, but pioneering director Michel Gondry did, thanks to the White Stripes. In the eye-popping video for “Fell in Love With a Girl,” a two-minute blast of O.P.P.-like fantasy, the candy-colored pair from Detroit strum, jump and sprint their way through a building-block realm that… Read more »
Ah, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. A hallowed American institution and a can’t-miss event for Garfield fans. As the New York City-based parade progresses through the streets, so too does it run across almost every television screen in the nation. While the floats and balloons ranging from the Pillsbury Doughboy, Kermit The Frog, and Snoopy have remained iconic for years upon years, we are still fixated on the unbelievable alternative celebrity guest cameos through the mid-2000s and early 2010s. After all, what’s a better precursor to bizarre, unsolicited political dinner conversation than a live performance from Plain White T’s? These… Read more »
