Detroit Electronic Music Fest Expands

The Detroit Electronic Music Festival drew more than 1 million people in each of its first two years. This year, organizers are emphasizing a wider variety of performers – and wondering why techno, which is hugely popular in Europe, is less well-received in the United States. The lineup of nearly 70 performers represents a blend of urban music, and includes Parliament Funkadelic’s George Clinton and the Los Angeles-based hip-hop trio Dilated Peoples. The three-day festival starts Saturday. “What we’re seeing now is a combination between hip-hop music and electronic music, and I think the Detroit festival is capitalizing on that,”… Read more »

Pet Shop Boys Wrap Album

The Pet Shop Boys finished their ninth album yesterday. The as-yet-untitled release is due in March. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe turned fourteen tracks over to engineer Michael Brauer, who finished mixing the tracks on November 3rd. The record will be the Pet Shop Boys first album of new material since 1999’s Nightlife. Earlier this year, the group’s first… Read more »

Moby, Danny Tenaglia, Other DJs Turn Out For NY Club Benefit

For some, the last two weeks have been a time when the role of music abruptly shifted from the indispensable rhythm of life to a frivolous, even annoying, specter of sound. It was, therefore, with great expectation mixed with a bit of trepidation that dance-music fans in the New York area received the news of the all-star DJ lineup – which included Moby, Danny Tenaglia, Little Louie Vega and David Morales – assembled for a fundraising event Tuesday at the nightclub Centro-Fly. The occasion was dreamed up on September 13 by the club’s owners, Tom Sisk and David Baxley, when… Read more »

LMiV today announced the launch of websites for five radio station affiliates and outlined plans to roll out another 166 sites. The five beta sites-consisting of stations owned by Bonneville, Corus, Emmis, Jefferson-Pilot, and Entercom-showcase the concepts and network infrastructure behind LMiV. Little more than eight months ago, LMiV’s five founding companies pledged to redefine radio’s relationship with the Internet by giving broadcasters the opportunity to expand into the electronic publishing arena. With the launch of these sites, the consortium says it is now delivering on that promise. “For the first time, we’ve made the Internet serve radio’s interests, instead… Read more »

New York Police Gang Unit Targets Hip-Hop Community

The New York City Police Department has a message for the city’s hip-hop community: we’re watching you. Based on what it claims is a “culture of violence” in the hip-hop world, the police’s gang intelligence unit has begun watching nightclubs frequented by celebrity musicians. Police are also compiling a dossier on rappers and others in the music industry with criminal histories. “It would be ignorant for us to ignore the fact that there have been violent incidents where the only common denominator is the music industry,” police spokesperson Sgt. Brian Burke said Friday (April 20). “In an effort to ensure… Read more »
