Santana Raises Millions to Fight AIDS

Grammy-winning guitarist Carlos Santana has been working for free this summer so that those engaged in the fight against AIDS may benefit. Santana, who pledged the net proceeds from the U.S. leg of his “Shaman” tour to the fight against the AIDS pandemic in Africa, wrapped up the 23-city tour Monday night with a Hollywood Bowl show before a packed audience. He estimates the tour raised at least $2 million. “Because of you, there will be education, prevention, and there will be healing. Thank you for coming forward with your beautiful heart and your energy,” Santana, who turns 56 on… Read more »

The Who Decides to Return to Stage

The two surviving members of The Who decided Friday to resume their scheduled three-month U.S. tour despite the sudden death of bassist John Entwistle, their bandmate of nearly four decades. “The band decided to recommence the tour beginning at the Hollywood Bowl (a Monday night show),” according to a message posted on guitarist Pete Townshend’s Web site. The first show will serve as “a tribute to John Entwistle,” the band said in a separate statement. Pino Palladino, a British session player who has worked on Townshend’s solo projects, will fill in for Entwhistle, the Web site said. The band intends… Read more »

Courtney Love Plays Restroom Gig for Label Exec

Some musicians will sing almost anywhere to get a new record contract. Rock ‘n’ roll bad girl Courtney Love performed for the president of a major record label in a backstage bathroom Saturday night after her Hollywood Bowl concert was cut short by time constraints, her publicist said on Monday. The unusual V.I.P. restroom gig was hastily arranged to give the unnamed label executive a chance to hear Love and her new band play a couple of songs they never got to perform for the audience, spokesman Tas Steiner said. Love, 37, who was opening for rock band Jane’s Addiction,… Read more »

Courtney To Open Jane's Show

Courtney Love will serve as opening act for Jane’s Addiction on the band’s October 27th Hollywood Bowl show. This will be the first time Love will be billed as a solo artist, but former Hole drummer Patty Schemel will be part of her backing band. With Hole entangled in a contract dispute with Geffen Records, Love had put together the all-girl band Bastard, featuring Schemel, Veruca Salt founder Louise Post and former Rockit Girl guitarist Gina Crosley. With Post and Crosley leaving the group to work on a Veruca Salt album, the Bastard project has been sidelined. Bastard did complete… Read more »

Radiohead Broadcast U.S. Tour Dates

Along with the release of Amnesiac Tuesday (June 5) and a trippy new video on the air, Radiohead announced a dozen more summer U.S. tour dates. They’ll wrap things up August 20 at the Hollywood Bowl. Amnesiac, the band’s fifth full-length, sticks close to the ethereal, electronics-heavy sound of 2000’s Kid A – it was recorded during the same sessions – but throws in a few… Read more »

Radiohead Plans Extensive Amnesiac Tours

The release of Amnesiac on June 5 will bring to a conclusion Radiohead’s three-year saga of what to do after OK Computer. And after going in markedly different directions with Amnesiac and last fall’s Kid A, bassist Colin Greenwood says he expects the group to drift back toward something resembling a standard operating procedure. “We’ve talked about doing a guitar album next,” Greenwood reports. “The reason we did these two records is to show that anything is possible rather than everything is expected; the last thing we wanted to do was go into the studio and make another version of… Read more »
