Previously unreleased material from Coldplay, Dido, the Doves and others is slated for the soundtrack to the teen sci-fi drama Roswell. Due out February 26th, the album will include Dido’s “Here With Me,” the show’s theme song, both in its original version and in a remix done by Dido’s brother, Rollo, of the dance outfit Faithless. Coldplay took a break from recording its second album and squeezed into to a local London pub on Friday (November 23) to tune up for its upcoming American dates. The band, minus ill bassist Guy Berryman, performed at the Shepherd pub with “acoustic guitars, disco lights and a pub-singer P.A. system…hastily installed in the corner near the dartboard,” according to a report on the band’s official website (coldplay.com) by Coldplay guitar tech Matt McGinn. Coldplay have given Rocky himself trouble over the use of their song “Trouble.” With a reputation already going around that the band isn’t too accomodating or considerate, Coldplay have denied Sylvestor Stallone use of the tune off their debut Parachutes for the soundtrack to his upcoming film called Driven. It seems the band was approached by Sly personally, but the actor’s charm couldn’t work on the Brit boys, who felt the music-to-movie matchup wasn’t appropriate. Someday they may be begging for Stallone to call them.
Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland has plenty of memories from the British group’s last North American tour earlier this year – and not all of them good. “The one that overshadows everything was going on for one song in New York and having to leave the stage ’cause Chris [Martin] had lost his voice,” Buckland says. “We did ‘Yellow’ with someone from the crowd singing. After nailing “Shiver” with his trademark falsetto two songs into last night’s opening show of Coldplay’s second U.S. tour, Chris Martin greeted the crowd. “Sorry we’re a bit later than expected, like three months or something,” the singer told fans stuffed into Boston’s Avalon Ballroom, referring to a date Coldplay scrapped due to Martin’s sore throat. “But it gives you a buildup.” Vaulted expectations probably aren’t the best measure of a band such as Coldplay, a group supporting a solitary CD, Parachutes, whose sublime pleasures tend to creep up on listeners. After cutting short a brief North American trek in February, Coldplay have announced plans to return to the States later this spring for a more extensive tour, set to kick off May 24 in Boston. The wistful Brit rock group has tapped Modesto, California’s Grandaddy to serve as the supporting act on the tour, which includes appearances on May 27 and 28 at the HFS Festival in Washington, D.C., and a June 23 KROQ-sponsored show in Los Angeles, according to Coldplay’s label. 2024 is the year of IDLES. The British punk band has been sharing dazzling singles including “Dancer,” “Gift Horse,” and “Grace” ahead of their LP release TANGK, due out on February 16.
