Damone Find Love At The Carwash, Don't Think Sum 41 Are Funny

Mullets, Chevelles, BMX bikes, muscle cars, cheesy mustaches. The science of guitar solos by White Lion and Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt. These are ’80s things bands like Blink-182 like to poke fun at. Damone’s Dave Pino, however, isn’t laughing with them. “That whole mullet thing, American Hi-Fi and Sum 41 can goof on that stuff – the Camaro-driving guy with the mustache. It’s funny and I get it, but it’s offensive to us,” said Pino, the musical mastermind behind Waltham, Massachusetts, rockers Damone. “In this town, we’re stuck in some ’80s suburb,” Pino explained of the working- class Boston ‘burb of… Read more »

Morpheus Shutdown Shows Plug Can Be Pulled On Peer-To-Peer

If you’ve tried to download a song using Morpheus lately, you probably know that the most popular file-swapping software doesn’t work. Although an operable preview of a new version was made available Saturday, the shuttering of Morpheus on February 26 shattered the commonly held belief that file sharing without the use of a central server couldn’t be stopped. Software like Morpheus, Kazaa and Grokster was thought to be shielded from the kind of plug-pulling that brought down Napster in July. Unlike Napster – which cataloged its available files on a central server that, if disabled, rendered the program impotent –… Read more »

Napster Users Write Eulogy As Service Goes Dark

Napster’s legally challenged song-swap service went dark last week and sentiment among many former users grew even darker. Napster suspended file-sharing July 2 for a self-imposed shutdown as it battled technical glitches related to its latest upgrade, which is intended to help it comply with a court order barring it from offering copyrighted material on its service. No time for a resumption had yet been given as of Sunday. Many habitual music downloaders seemed to agree that Napster’s latest technical woes were the nail in the coffin of the once phenomenally popular service. “Napster was dead six months ago. They… Read more »

Rock And Rain At RFK

Fat chance Melanie Szepvolgyi is going to forget this year’s HFStival. Out of the 30-plus bands at the two-day musical extravaganza going on at RFK Stadium, she had wanted most to see Coldplay, the up and coming Britpop band. She was as surprised as anyone yesterday when lead singer Chris Martin pulled her up on stage to sing. “I was in the front of the stage, and nobody knew them up there. [People in the crowd] were being so rude and obnoxious,” said the still-glowing 24-year-old who had flown in from Columbus, Ohio. “Then they started playing my favorite song,… Read more »

Courtney Love Sings The Blues

Hole frontwoman recording jazz and blues standards for soundtrack to her film “Hello Suckers.” Courtney Love’s image has gone from grunge to classic Hollywood glam, and now her music is going back in time. The project teams her with old friend Roddy Bottum of Imperial Teen; the pair were momentary bandmates in the early ’80s when Love briefly joined Faith No More, in which Bottum played keyboards. Love has already handpicked several songs for the project and… Read more »

VH1 To Audition 2 Video Shows

VH1 is developing two pilots for weekly music video shows: one to highlight alternative bands that have crossed into the mainstream and the other to showcase female artists. The shows could air on the network in one to three months and will appear in various dayparts, VH1 executive vp music and talent Rick Krim said. The announcement was the first for Krim after joining VH1 about six weeks ago. He replaced Wayne Isaak, who left in January.
