Incubus Responds To Former DJ Royalty Arbitration Claim

Just about six months after former Incubus deejay Gavin Koppel filed for arbitration in regard to past royalties, the band has filed a motion with the Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking what is known as “declaratory relief,” reports Rollingstone.com. By seeking declaratory relief, the band is looking to clarify its duties and rights on a 1999 royalty settlement reached with Koppel. The band also hopes for a protective order seeking to keep private the financial details of its 1999 settlement with Koppel, known then as DJ Lyfe. Koppel filed the suit on January 16 with the American Arbitration Association,… Read more »

Mariah vs. Eminem

Mariah Carey’s unlikely to give Eminem a charm bracelet, much less extend an olive branch. The pissed-off pop songstress, who’s relaxing in the Caribbean before setting sail on a six-month world tour in support of her new album, Charmbracelet, had some pointed words for the rap superstar after hearing reports that Em threatened to include samples of several rambling voicemail messages she left him in an upcoming tune. “I don’t know what the hell he’s doing,” Carey grouses in the New York Daily News on Thursday. “It’s a little excessive. Doesn’t it seem a little bit girly? Like we’re in… Read more »

Relatives of two victims of the deadly Rhode Island nightclub fire sued the club owners and the rock band Great White among others on Tuesday in likely the first wrongful death suit related to the blaze, the plaintiffs’ lawyer said. The lawsuit was filed in Providence Superior Court in Rhode Island on behalf of the families of Donald Roderiques and Tina Ayer. Their lawyer, Brian Cunha, said he expected to file more suits on behalf of four other families later this week. He said he would ask the jury for at least $1 million per victim. Osbournes Poke Fun at Britney, Justin

Sheryl Crow, an activist for recording artists’ rights, brought her own message against a possible war with Iraq to Monday night’s American Music Awards. Crow accepted her award for pop-rock female artist wearing a white T-shirt emblazoned with the message “war is not the answer” in black sequins. She had the V-neck shirt specially made. “I just think there’s a really vital, sweeping peace movement out there that’s not getting covered in the press, so I just kind of try to do my part,” she said backstage. “I think war is based in greed and there are huge karmic retributions… Read more »

Rage, Cornell Unshackle Audioslave

Chris Cornell and the remnants of Rage Against the Machine are ready to put the super back in their supergroup. Yes, their hyped off-again, on-again collaboration is back on, and to prove it, they’re releasing an album and planning a tour. After hooking up with much fanfare in early 2001, the group-then toying with the name Civilian-wrote 20 songs, hit the studio with Rick Rubin (who produced the last Rage album) and even signed on as an Ozzfest mainstager. But the project was seemingly scuttled when ex-Soundgarden singer Cornell walked last March. The Ragers-guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and… Read more »

Artists Debate Releasing Discs Near 9/11 Anniversary

Terrorism struck the United States on a Tuesday, the day labels release albums, and that day had its share of potential blockbusters: Jay-Z, Bob Dylan and Mariah Carey were among the artists who released records on September 11, 2001. The first anniversary of the attacks, by contrast, will pass quietly in the nation’s record stores, with no big-name releases hitting shelves this week and retailers predicting that new records will be the furthest thing from fans’ minds. “It just seems to be in bad taste,” said bassist Joe Escalante of veteran punk band the Vandals, who chose a September 17… Read more »

'Idol' sweet music to RCA

“American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson may have the magic to put RCA Records back on top. All the major record labels are pulling out their big-gun releases for the fourth quarter in hopes of hitting some high numbers to make up for the year’s extreme sales dip. RCA has been struggling overall because of a weak release schedule. The label has thus far scored hits only with Dave Matthews Band’s “Busted Stuff,” which has sold more than 1.2 million units, and critically acclaimed postpunk band the Strokes, whose “Is This It” has passed the half-million mark. Clarkson’s two-sided single release,… Read more »
