Pink Gets Party Started at Toys for Tots

The third time is feeling like a charm for Pink. The popster-turned-rockster – in the middle of promotions for her latest disc, “Try This” – battled her way to creative freedom, which surprisingly for her, came with mainstream success and a few other rewards. “I never expected (second album) “M!ssundaztood” to be that commercial and that successful, and that was a blessing,” Miss Pink said Thursday before going on stage at Motorola’s fifth annual talk-of-the-town holiday bash benefiting Toys for Tots. “The lyrics got out to a lot of people, and I feel like I’ve done it my way and… Read more »

No Country Weepers on Latest Adams Effort

Ryan Adams hasn’t arrived for a scheduled afternoon interview, sending instead an apologetic manager with an explanation. “Ryan went out last night with Ron Wood,” the manager said. Oh. Enough said. The bar tab for a summit between two generations of notorious rock ‘n’ roll party animals must have approached the gross national product of some small nations. But all is not as it seems. The next day, Adams insists it was a low-key evening; his Rolling Stones pal wasn’t drinking. Twin cups of Alka Seltzer and black coffee suggest some recovery time for Adams. His music is confounding expectations,… Read more »

Pepsi Gives Away Downloads

Pepsi has a new affiliation with a hot, rising music star. But this time, Apple Computer’s iTunes is shoving aside the likes of Britney Spears and Beyonce. The soft-drink giant plans to give away 100 million downloads from iTunes next year and plug the service in a Super Bowl commercial. The relationship between Pepsi and Apple – the brainchild of Interscope chief executive Jimmy Iovine – is an effort to drive consumer interest in the iTunes service, which is now available for Windows-based computers. The offer kicks off Feb. 1 with the Super Bowl ad, and it will run until… Read more »

Can Porn Kill File-Sharing?

The music industry is hoping that the availability of child pornography on peer-to-peer networks such as Kazaa will help put file sharing out of business. Record executives have been frustrated that Congress hasn’t acted to curb piracy on these services, but some are now optimistic that lawmakers will intervene. “This is like Al Capone and taxes, which is how the government got him,” says Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Records. “This shows peer-to-peers for what they really are.” At a September 9th Senate hearing on the connection between porn and peer-to-peer, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, warned about the “great risk… Read more »

What If Madonna Had Kissed Pink? It Almost Happened

It was a moment that captivated the nation, but what would it have been like if Madonna had picked different kissmates for her VMA performance? As it turns out, Pink was supposed to be there too. “It was originally supposed to be different people involved,” Pink told MTV News Europe, “but I didn’t even know [what was going to happen during the performance]. The kiss wasn’t even talked about.” Rumors had been rampant before the Video Music Awards that Madonna would be taking the stage with representatives of the younger pop generation, but talk had centered mostly on Britney Spears… Read more »

Rain and mud were no match for a crowd of thousands who flocked to the National Mall Thursday for a free concert featuring Britney Spears, Aerosmith and Aretha Franklin. The concert was staged by the NFL to create excitement about the start of football season – a game between the Washington Redskins and New York Jets. Six blocks of the Mall were filled with a crowd estimated at 130,000, according to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said. The crowd was orderly and only two people were arrested, U.S. Park Police said. About 1,000 officers from the Park Police and 35 other… Read more »

Dave Navarro Seeking Out Madonna

Dave Navarro performed at last week’s MTV Video Music Awards with Christina Aguilera and was there in person to witness Madonna’s smooches with Aguilera and Britney Spears. Although he has worked with his fair share of hot female pop stars, he is currently eyeing his next gal. “At this point I’d like to do a collaboration with Madonna,” Navarro said. “I think that would be exciting. So far I’ve been able to collaborate with Christina Aguilera and Michelle Branch and Mariah Carey. I think Madonna’s, you know, next on my list. And Madonna actually looks younger than Britney and Christina.… Read more »

Missy Elliott Wins MTV Video of the Year

There were no big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards – Missy Elliott’s “Work It” won two awards, including video of the year, while Justin Timberlake, Coldplay and Beyonce had three apiece. The 71-year-old Johnny Cash, nominated seven times for “Hurt,” won once. As usual, the most memorable moments had nothing to do with the moonmen trophies. Twenty years after the first MTV Video Music Awards, not much has changed – Madonna still makes jaws drop and cheeks blush. Just like her first time, the superstar upstaged everyone at the 20th annual MTV Video Music Awards, only she had… Read more »
