Prince to Perform at Hong Kong Festival


Prince will headline a government-sponsored music festival aimed at boosting the image of SARS-battered Hong Kong. He’ll perform at the opening of the concert series, “Hong Kong Harbour Fest,” on Oct. 17, organizers said Thursday. Top tickets for his show are priced at $127. Hendrix Label Unearths Vintage Festival Cuts


Chiming in with the “Year of the Blues” theme, Jimi Hendrix’s record label is set to release two DVDs and one CD commemorating the American Folk Blues Festival, featuring performances in the early ’60s by folk and blues masters playing to European crowds. “The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966” (Experience Hendrix/Universal Music Enterprises) will be released in two DVD volumes Aug. 26, as will a compilation of 16 audio highlights on one CD. Britney Spears To Perform Two New Songs On NFL TV Special


Britney Spears will unveil at least two new songs when she rings in this year’s football season along with Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin and other performers. Prior to the September 4 game between the New York Jets and Washington Redskins, Spears will perform a concert for the NFL Kickoff Weekend in Washington, D.C., the NFL announced Monday. Plug Pulled On Beastie Boys/ Radiohead Field Day Festival


Officials in Suffolk County, New York, have denied a mass gathering permit for the June 7-8 Field Day Music Festival, but the Beastie Boys, Beck, Radiohead, N.E.R.D. and more than a dozen other acts are hoping last-minute negotiations can save the concert. On Tuesday (May 27), health officials nixed the permit after Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller announced that his department wouldn’t be able to safely patrol the concert, which is expected to draw 50,000 people to Suffolk County’s Calverton Enterprise Park. Industry Publication Values Music Industry at $47.6B


The value of the global music industry reached $47.6 billion in 2001, according to a report by British industry publication Music Week. The figures cover recorded music sales, music publishing, ticket sales for live events, merchandising and sponsorship, and Music Week said Wednesday they mark the first attempt to place a value on the global music universe. Sales of recorded music in 2001 accounted for 70 percent of global revenue, around $33.3 billion, with ticket sales for live events providing the second-highest revenue source at around $6.5 billion, the report said. Sheryl Crow looks to make it an endless summer with a string of headlining dates that will carry her into October. The shows are her first solo outings to promote her latest platinum album, C’mon, C’mon.
