Michael Jackson Special To Re-Air, With Britney This Time

Though Michael Jackson won’t perform at the American Music Awards in early January after all, he’ll still be performing on television that same night – on another network. CBS plans to re-broadcast the singer’s concert special, “Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration,” with previously unseen footage of Britney Spears and Lil’ Romeo, to air against the AMAs on ABC January 9th. Jackson’s two-hour concert special, which originally aired November 13th, gave CBS some of its highest ratings this year – it was the network’s biggest Tuesday night, excluding sports programming, since 1994. According to Nielsen Media Research estimates, an estimated 45… Read more »

Kid Rock Rocks Ramstein Air Base

Fresh from his blockbuster performance before U.S. military forces stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Lava/Atlantic recording artist Kid Rock has just scored RIAA platinum with his new album, “COCKY.” The announcement comes less than one month after the release of the Kid Rock-produced collection, which includes the current hit single, “Forever.” Recent weeks have seen Kid Rock continuing to demonstrate his support of American military personnel, including a very special appearance at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado, where he signed autographs and posed for pictures with thousands of U.S. sailors. In early December, Kid Rock and his Twisted… Read more »

New EMI chief to take stage as profits tumble

EMI’s glittering roster of recording artists, from Mariah Carey to the Rolling Stones, failed to save the music giant from a dismal year, but investors are pinning hopes on new recruit Alain Levy to bring sparkle back to the balance sheet. In an industry facing its worst ever year, EMI is reeling from two failed mergers and a lack of big hits. Jaded investors are eager to hear Levy’s plans as the new head of recorded music when the group reports an expected sharp fall in first half profits Monday. EMI warned in September that full-year profits would slide 20… Read more »

'N Sync singer makes a splash in Hollywood

Cue ear-splitting shrieks from millions of preteen girls. For Lance Bass, as most adults don’t know, is one-fifth of ‘N Sync, the mega-selling boy-band that has helped keep the music industry afloat in recent years. It’s hard to imagine ‘N Sync winning a Grammy Award for its lightweight pop. So – strange but true – Bass is setting his sights on winning a coveted Academy Award from stuffy Hollywood for his role as a moonlighting movie producer. The 22-year-old Mississippi native set up a movie production company earlier this year, naming it A Happy Place, and is holding meetings like… Read more »

The Roots Want Off MCA Records

The Grammy Award-winning rap outfit the Roots is reportedly at odds with its MCA Records label. The group and MCA president Jay Boberg aired their differences in a recent interview with entertainment writer Celine Wong. The group’s Black Thought (Tariq Trotter), who has been working on a solo set, shared his thoughts on the current label situation and his forthcoming album, “I know from experience, from being on Geffen and from being on MCA, that whatever I put out basically has to be self-sufficient. My album’s pretty much going to have to be able to sell itself, because it’s going… Read more »

No Doubt Make Party Music

No Doubt began as a good-time ska-party band, full of California sunshine. But in the last few years, that’s been obscured by smog: bruised egos within the band, gloomy lyrics and weak record sales for last year’s Return of Saturn. The bad times are all gone on their upcoming album, Rock Steady, reports singer Gwen Stefani. “We’re not taking ourselves so seriously,” she says. “It’s like, get over it. We’re a fucking band and we’re really lucky to be doing what we do.” Rock Steady, out December 18th, is a sweet pop confection, made with arrays of keyboards, a dance-floor… Read more »

Anthrax 101: What Is It And What Can It Do To Us?

As of Friday evening (October 12), four cases of anthrax had been reported in the United States since September 11, three in Florida and one in New York. In light of that disturbing news, you may be wondering what anthrax is exactly and what threat it poses to us? Anthrax is an infectious disease that has been around for centuries. It is found most commonly in farm animals but humans can contract it three ways: 1. ingesting the anthrax bacteria by eating bad food, such as tainted meat 2. handling infected material such as powder, soil, animal skins or hides… Read more »

Anthrax on Anthrax

Anthrax never wanted this kind of publicity. The seminal New York metal band’s name is all over the press these days for all the wrong reasons – a small outbreak of the bio-terrorist disease of choice in Florida has an already understandably edgy America in panic mode. Set to launch their Operation Enduring Metal tour with Judas Priest in early 2002 (“the tour the terrorists tried to stop”), the group has let it be known they have no immediate designs on a name change. A statement from the band jokingly begins, “In light of current events, we are changing the… Read more »

Labels' Online Music Services Nearly Ready, But Will People Pay?

MusicNet, Pressplay working out kinks in technology, licensing – now they need paying users. Although the major labels have been making strides in their efforts to deliver music to listeners’ desktops while collecting money for themselves and their artists, the road ahead is still littered with questions, and the labels’ long-promised services still are not a reality. When will music fans see them? When they do, will they be willing to pay for something they now can get for free? Can the industry shoot down all the new hotshot – and free – file-trading services? And whatever happened to Napster,… Read more »

Destiny's Child Mines Triumph From Trauma

Beyonce Knowles of the glittery vocal trio Destiny’s Child is no dummy. She knows that as wrenching as it was to go through the acrimonious departure of two co-founding bandmates, the attendant furor sparked welcome publicity for the group. In fact, since the spring of 2000, the reconstituted Destiny’s Child, comprising Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, has become a dominant pop music force. Three multi-platinum albums and a string of hits – “Say My Name,” “Jumpin’, Jumpin’,” “Survivor” and the “Charlie’s Angels” film theme – have kept the threesome at the top of the charts and made them a… Read more »
