Former second-stage headliner Rob Zombie will fill the main-stage slot vacated by the untitled Chris Cornell-Rage Against the Machine collaboration, which forfeited the slot after the ex-Soundgarden singer announced he was “no longer moving forward” with the project, according to tour organizers. A ballot has been posted on the Ozzfest Web site asking for suggestions to fill the void, which opened when Cornell made public his decision to no longer work with the new, unnamed group composed of Rage Against the Machine members guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk. Billboard and MTV report that Chris Cornell of Rage Against the Machine has left the band. Cornell joined after singer Zach de la Rocha left. The band did not intend to keep the Rage name but hasn’t announced a new name yet. The new group was set to debut at Ozzfest this summer. Ozzfest organizers refuse to comment. No reason was given for Cornell’s departure.

If Rage Against the Machine fans harbored some anger before, they’re about to be really pissed. Fans hoping to catch the first glimpse of the new, Chris Cornell-fronted group on this summer’s Ozzfest will have to make do with the mental image they’ve built since the two parties began jamming together last year, as the former Soundgarden frontman has withdrawn from the project, effectively scrapping plans to participate in the annual summer metalfest.
