Mooney Suzuki Save Jack Black's Butt, Plan To Work With The Matrix

A couple of years ago, a crazed Mooney Suzuki fan bum-rushed the band during a show and squirted mustard on singer/guitarist Sammy James Jr.’s fuzz box guitar pedal. The guy was apparently pissed that the garage rockers had “sold out” and signed with tiny indie label Estrus Records for their 2000 debut, People Get Ready, so he shouted, “Why don’t you have Estrus buy you a new one!” If that’s how he felt then, things could get much uglier next year when the band releases its as-yet-untitled third album, the first under its new deal with Columbia Records. Not to… Read more »

Led Zeppelin Allows Song To Be Used In 'School Of Rock'

Led Zeppelin has agreed to let one of their songs be used in the soundtrack for the upcoming film School Of Rock-but only because its star, Jack Black, asked personally. According to the studio, Black-who makes music with the comical rock act Tenacious D-stepped in after School Of Rock director Richard Linklater was unable to get permission to use “Immigrant Song.” Black reportedly sent a humorous videotaped request for the song to the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin, who subsequently gave their approval. The School Of Rock soundtrack comes out September 30, while the film opens October 3. Led… Read more »

Backstage Notes from the Video Music Awards

Back to host the MTV Video Music Awrds after a brief hiatus, Chris Rock said his decision to return was a matter of timing. “I was looking for the culture to change a little bit, and it did,” he said. He saluted past host Jimmy Fallon from “Saturday Night Live” and held out hope that another favorite comic of his eventually gets a chance to host. “Chris Tucker would be great doing this thing,” he said. Next up for Rock is the Black Ambition Tour, which will have him performing stand-up around the country. But first, he said, he was… Read more »

Good Charlotte Find Where There Is Love, There Is Hate

The past two years have been a turbo-charged merry-go-round for Maryland punk-pop group Good Charlotte. The band’s debut single, “Little Things,” from its eponymous 2000 album, drove the group to the top of the “TRL” heap, and a Warped tour and outing with Blink-182 helped spread the Good vibes far and wide. The group’s new single, “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous,” is currently heating up airwaves, and a video for the song, which features cameos by ‘NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick, Tenacious D sideman Kyle Gass and former Minutemen and Firehose member Mike Watt, is getting lots of love as well.… Read more »

MTV Movie Awards Maintain Comic Vibe

Irreverent and bordering on insolent, the MTV Movie Awards have built a following over the past decade by mocking Hollywood as much as celebrating it. Best Villain? Best Kiss? Best Fight? Lifetime achievement awards for Chewbacca from “Star Wars,” and for cameo character actor Clint Howard, the squinty-eyed little brother of director Ron Howard? Such are the honors bestowed at the MTV Movie Awards, which in its 11th year comes not to praise cinema but to parody it. This year’s ceremony takes place Saturday and will be broadcast Thursday (June 6). “We’re always looking to make people laugh. That’s more… Read more »

Bjork's Pit, Beck's Set Among Few Surprises At Risk-Free Coachella – Review

To the left, a full moon illuminated a row of palm trees swaying in a mellow breeze as the Beta Band played their melodic pop. To the right, a red sun set over a gorgeous mountain range as Siouxsie and the Banshees wrapped up their first festival performance in more than seven years. Ahead, DJ Z-Trip captivated a titanic tent overflowing with dancers by marrying Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and Rage Against the Machine’s “Testify.” It was a stereophonic moment of musical bliss. It was Coachella in a nutshell. The third annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival took over… Read more »

Grohl Puts Foos On Hold, Returns To Drumkit With Queens

Work on the Foo Fighters’ new album has been put to rest while frontman Dave Grohl plays drums for Queens of the Stone Age. “After four months, three studios and who knows how many foosball games, we decided to take a break from it,” Grohl wrote in a post on the Foo Fighters’ official Web site. “We thought it might be a good idea to sit back and chill out a little bit. I mean, I can’t wait to release this stuff, it’s really kick-ass, but I think we’re going to relax… [and] record some more.” The band had several… Read more »
