Eagles turn down Super Bowl slot

The Eagles have turned down an offer to perform at next year’s Super Bowl, saying they’d rather perform at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. Frontman Don Henley told the Associated Press that playing at the legendary country music venue “would be an honor,” but did not elaborate on his band’s decision to turn down the slot at the Super Bowl–the most-watched television event in the U.S. The Eagles seem to be drifting from classic rockers to country crooners. Their recent album Long Road Out Of Eden topped Billboard’s country music chart for four weeks in 2007. Henley said he was glad… Read more »

Prince rocks Super Bowl halftime show

Phew! CBS got through the halftime show without a “wardrobe malfunction.” The Artist Formerly Known as a Munchkin of Wardrobe Dysfunction began by singing “Let’s Go Crazy,” but he didn’t. Prince, who became a Jehovah’s Witness in the mid-1990s, no longer wears yellow, butt-baring pants as he did at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards (prompting Howard Stern’s send-up at the ’92 VMAs). The closest thing to a fashion statement Sunday night was an odd kerchief on his head. So the NFL had no repeat of the 2004 Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake show, which happened the last time CBS broadcast the… Read more »

McCartney Plays It Safe at Super Bowl

New York – Nobody, but nobody was worried when Paul McCartney stripped off his jacket midway through his halftime performance at the Super Bowl. All he revealed was a long-sleeved red shirt. Nothing malfunctioned. And if he wore any nipple jewelry, he mercifully kept it to himself. NFL officials wanted a safe halftime show after last year’s Janet Jackson fiasco, and McCartney delivered. It was sweet nostalgia for the people stunned by Jackson’s MTV-produced spectacle, if a bit off-putting for the kids: Each of his four songs was more than 30 years old. Surely you recall last year’s climax to… Read more »

Alicia Keys to Sing Before Super Bowl

licia Keys will sing “America the Beautiful” prior to this year’s Super Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. It will be just the third time the song is sung at the Super Bowl – previously performed only by Vicki Carr and Ray Charles. Accompanying Keys will be 150 students from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, which Charles attended as a youth in 1937. “I’m very excited to be playing at the Super Bowl for the first time especially because I will be singing a song made famous by an artist I admire, miss and respect, Ray Charles, along… Read more »

Janet Apologizes, Says Super Bowl Stunt Went Too Far

One day after Janet Jackson’s shocking Super Bowl halftime performance, the singer took responsibility for the breast-baring incident and said she never intended the stunt to go as far as it did. “The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals,” Jackson said in a statement released Monday (February 2). “MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended – including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL.” Jackson’s performance shocked onlookers when Justin… Read more »

Glitz, Star Power Heats Up at Super Bowl

For the humdrum New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers, putting on a show to match the glitz, glitter and star power of the rest of Super Bowl Sunday was no easy task. Typical of America’s biggest unofficial holiday, the game was only the icing on an over-the-top extravaganza. There was a gleaming new $450 million stadium to show off, a slew of pricey new ads, and Beyonce, Janet Jackson and P. Diddy to share the field. The biggest cliffhanger of the week wasn’t who would win, but whether Janet’s brother, Michael, would show up. He didn’t, but Justin Timberlake did,… Read more »

Janet, Justin, MTV Apologize For Super Bowl Flash

The organizers of the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show had hoped that a surprise guest would get people talking long after the game, but they wound up with one more surprise than they had bargained for. Janet Jackson’s right breast was exposed at the end of her performance after Justin Timberlake – who was expected to be the night’s biggest surprise – pulled off a piece of Janet’s costume. As a result the move, some 72,000 fans in Reliant Stadium and an estimated 100 million watching around the world saw more of Janet than expected. “I am sorry if anyone… Read more »

Illegal Music Downloader in Super Bowl Ad

Downloading music online from rogue file-sharing networks got 14-year-old Annie Leith sued for thousands of dollars. Now it has landed her a leading spot on a national ad that will debut during the Super Bowl. Leith and her 17-year-old sister downloaded 960 songs over a three-year period using the popular Kazaa program. But the free music binge got Leith ensnared in the legal dragnet cast by the Recording Industry Association of America in September. “We didn’t know it was illegal,” the New York City high school freshman said Friday. The lawsuit was ultimately settled for $3,000. But Leith couldn’t pass… Read more »

Janet Jackson's Super Bowl Show Promises 'Shocking Moments'

The Super Bowl means just as much to the entertainment world as it does to those who follow sports. As the big game approaches, one of the top questions along with “Who’s going to win?” is “What will Janet Jackson be doing at the halftime show?” But Janet isn’t the only celebrity cutie who’ll be catching eyes during the MTV-produced AOL Top Speed Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime performance Sunday. Jessica Simpson has just been added to the festivities. MTV’s 12-minute program will commence with a short film, and then one half of the world’s most popular newlyweds will call for… Read more »

Bono's AIDS Plan Axed From Super Bowl Halftime Show

According to the Launch Radio Network, this year’s Super Bowl halftime show will not make space to promote awareness of the global AIDS crisis. Bono, has done an incredible job of creating awareness of the worldwide AIDS problem and was reportedly in talks with the NFL for about two years, trying to squeeze his message into the Super Bowl programming. The Super Bowl, of course, is one of the most watched annual televised events in the world and a perfect forum for any awareness campaign. Bono’s plan involved himself and Jennifer Lopezperforming a song called “An American Prayer” (which, as… Read more »
