Two Years After Jam Master Jay's Death, His Family Keeps His Name Alive

Saturday marks the second anniversary of the death of Jam Master Jay. As his family members have pressed on, they continue to keep their loved one’s name alive. A small gathering is planned in the Hollis neighborhood of Queens, New York, on Saturday (October 30), and in January they want to put on a benefit concert to celebrate what would have been the Run-DMC DJ’s 40th birthday. “Basically, we are doing fine,” Jay’s mother, Connie Mizell, said on Monday in New York. “We thank God we are doing as well as we are. I’d be remiss if I didn’t say… Read more »

Since his retirement, Jay-Z says he’s been courted by several labels. But not only to rap: They want to give the Jiggaman an executive position, and one such position could be the president of Def Jam Records. For the last few weeks, rumors have been running rampant that Jay will soon take the job, which is second in command to Def Jam CEO LA Reid. Some say the deal will be finalized in less than a week. Jay does acknowledge that he’s been getting offers, but says he hasn’t accepted anything yet. “It’s just talks in the air right now,”… Read more »

Celebs! Music! Antics! (and some awards)

The trophy is a silly Moonman. Treasured memories include girl-on-girl kisses, a flying Fartman and the bobbling of a pasty-covered breast. Where other shows confer honors and respect, this one relishes gaffes, guffaws and giggles. Forget “The envelope, please.” It’s time to push the envelope. MTV’s Video Music Awards is among the most irreverent of awards shows. Which may be precisely why it matters. “It’s pop music; how seriously can you take it?” said MTV news correspondent Kurt Loder. “It’s not Martin Heidegger or something. There’s a lot of empty pomp associated with other shows, like the Oscars and even… Read more »

New York Police Department sources close to the case concede the investigation has been hampered by dead-end leads and uncooperative witnesses. “No one in that industry wants to be a rat,” said one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We’re not at a standstill,” countered police Lt. Alfred Murphy. “We’re still hopeful.” Some… Read more »

Jam Master Jay an Unlikely Target

As one of the forefathers of rap, with a history of social activism, Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay was an unlikely target for the kind of violence that killed rappers Tupac Shakur or the Notorious B.I.G. He was married with three kids, and a fixture in the Queens neighborhood where he grew up. Yet authorities were searching Thursday for the gunman who killed the 37-year-old disc jockey with a gunshot to the head inside his recording studio. “Jam Master Jay was a longtime family man and one of the founders of the group that knocked down all the doors for hip-hop,… Read more »

Jay-Z, More Support Musiq At Release Party

With those sunglasses he wears all the time, it’s sometimes hard to read Musiq. Except when he’s onstage. He can’t keep from smiling; he obviously loves what he’s doing. Wednesday night at B.B. King’s in New York City, the Soulchild held his album release party for Juslisen, which drops next Tuesday. Unlike most shindigs of this nature, Musiq didn’t just play cuts from his LP for attendees such as Jay-Z, Angie Stone, Capone and Bilal – the 24-year-old and his band played cuts. Before the main attraction came onto the stage, the Roots’ Black Thought warmed things up with his… Read more »

Jay would “Roc the Mic” with his boys Beanie Sigel, Cam’ron and Memphis Bleek. And Diddy and his Bad Boy crew would do their thing. Keep imagining; although it was almost a reality, the tour has been called off. Last week, while promoting her… Read more »
