One of the premier bands of the 1980s, Australia’s Midnight Oil is plotting a return to international prominence with that unmistakable big-bass, big-drum sound and the charismatic, herky-jerky flailing about of its 6-1/2-foot-tall bald leader, Peter Garrett. The band debuted a few new tunes Wednesday at the second of two packed L.A. club gigs that revealed a tonal softness, almost Beatlesque, that could permeate its new release, now slated for February. Clear Channel has identified 150 songs that are considered to be “lyrically inappropriate” for airplay in the wake of the terror attacks carried out in the U.S. on Tuesday, September 11. A Clear Channel spokesperson has confirmed that the list has been circulated among its stations across the country. The lyrical content targeted by the list includes any references to death, flying, September, or general destruction. Once a hip-hop artist achieves any semblance of success, expect to hear about it from his friends. More than simply brag about their platinum-selling homie, though, chances are they’ll rap with him on their own album. Within the last two months, collections from the Nelly-backed St. Lunatics and the Eminem-featured D12 have stormed into record stores. Brian McKnight has been tapped to join the Sears, Roebuck and Co. family for a nationwide tour that coincides with the release of McKnight’s latest Motown project, “superhero,” streeting Aug. 28. The “Sears Presents An Evening With Brian McKnight” tour kicks off in Cleveland on Sept. 19, with stops in 38 cities, wrapping up in Hawaii in December. Having performed brief sets everywhere from the Super Bowl to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the past few months, Aerosmith finally kicked off their much-anticipated Just Push Play tour Wednesday night. Co-founder of Death Row Records Marion “Suge” Knight will be released from state prison next week after serving more than four years. Knight, who turns 35 tomorrow, has been serving time on a nine-year sentence since October 1996 for a probation violation. He is currently at Mule Creek State Prison near Sacramento, Calif. and will be transferred on April 25 to an undisclosed federal facility to serve an additional 60 days. In a triple bill of Australian rock heavyweights that would have filled arenas in 1988, INXS, Midnight Oil, and Men At Work will team for a month-long North American tour this summer. The jaunt, with INXS and Midnight Oil alternating in the closing spot each night, begins May 28 in Atlanta and wraps June 27 in Las Vegas. INXS will be fronted by Jon Stevens, replacing Michael Hutchence, who committed suicide in late 1997.
