Passenger Lists Confirm Hollywood's Loss

As the scroll with the names of the dead from Tuesday’s terrorist outrage began to unfurl agonizingly slowly, America – and Hollywood – went into mourning for its victims of the attacks. The tight-knit entertainment community knew it could not escape the nightmare, particularly as three of the four doomed aircraft were bound for Los Angeles. And Wednesday, the full impact of the loss was beginning to be felt when the passenger manifests were released. One passenger was an Emmy-winning writer who died with his spouse, another a young cameraman who leaves behind his pregnant wife. Still another was a… Read more »

Breeders Days Away From Completing New LP

After eight years of rest, rehab and whirlwind recording sessions, the Breeders are finally ready to make another splash in the music world. Former Pixies bassist Kim Deal and her side-project-turned-chart-topping-power-pop-band are just a few days away from completing their first album since 1993’s Last Splash. Tentatively titled Title TK, a clever reference to the journalism symbol meaning “to come,” the album was produced by über-producer Steve Albini in his Electric Audio Recording Studio in Chicago. “The record as a collection covers a lot of territory,” said Albini, who produced and engineered records for both the Pixies and Breeders, as… Read more »

Ozzy Presides Over Metal Lovefest

It was heavy metal heaven Saturday at the sun-baked Blockbuster Bowl as an estimated 50,000-plus headbangers took in this year’s 12-hour-long edition of OzzFest, featuring a strong roster of young rock outfits and headlined by the granddaddy of metal bands, Black Sabbath. The main stage, the largest of three, got rolling mid-afternoon with Taproot, Mudvayne and former Ozzy Ozbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde offering varied styles of heavy rock under a blinding sun that pushed temperatures to around 100 degrees. Occupying the middle of the day was Crazy Town, whose members sent numerous shout-outs to the other bands on the bill;… Read more »

Black Crowes Singer In A Whole Lotta Love

Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson may have just married a famous actress, but the man at the helm of America’s “most rock ‘n’ roll” rock band has not gone Hollywood just yet. Yes, that is the lanky, longhaired Robinson accompanying his wife, Kate Hudson, to the Oscars and the Golden Globes. Yes, he does hobnob with famous actors and directors, but they discuss obscure records and movies, not box office grosses. “I’ve met so many cool people in my lifetime, but… just because you’re famous and wealthy doesn’t make me want to sit down and have dinner with you,” he… Read more »

Jackson's MJJ Records Searching For New Home

Pop superstar Michael Jackson is shopping his MJJ Records label, a joint deal with Sony Music, to other label groups, sources tell the Hollywood Reporter. MJJ Records, which Jackson launched in 1993 as part of a multimedia deal, is still under contract with Sony. As Jackson, who is signed to Sony’s Epic Records Group, continues to be a top-selling act internationally and given that MJJ has not produced any megaselling acts, it is not likely that Sony will prevent the pop star from making changes at MJJ, sources said. MJJ Records president and CEO Jerry Greenberg, who helped form the… Read more »

Garbage Sued For Copyright Infringement Over 'I Think I'M Paranoid'

Garbage, its former label, Almo Sounds, and its various publishing companies have been sued by Helios Music Corp. for copyright infringement and violation of the Lanham Act over the song “I Think I’m Paranoid.” The suit, filed in United States District Court for the Central District of California claims that Garbage’s “I Think I’m Paranoid”, a hit from the band’s last album, Version 2.0, infringes upon American Breed’s 1967 hit, “Bend Me, Shape Me”. The suit, which also names Rondor Music International, Almo Music Corp., Deadarm Music, Irving Music, and Vibecrusher Music as defendants, claims that the Garbage song “contains… Read more »

Rock Hall Makes Room For Simon, Jackson

The hobbled Michael Jackson and sweetly nostalgic Paul Simon made their second entrances into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, joined by fellow inductees Aerosmith, Queen and Steely Dan. Fifties vocal group The Flamingos, soul singer Solomon Burke and “La Bamba” singer Ritchie Valens completed the list of honorees at a New York ceremony Monday night. Jackson, already in the Hall of Fame with his brothers as a member of the Jackson 5, was earmarked for a solo career that includes “Thriller,” which Sony estimates has sold more than 47 million copies worldwide. He wore a white… Read more »
