Arctic Monkeys face the music with 2nd album

Young indie rockers Arctic Monkeys, who made history with Britain’s fastest-selling debut album in 2006, are out to prove they are no one-hit wonders with their second record released on Monday. Critics wonder if the weight of expectation will be too much for the musicians from the northern city of Sheffield, among the first to make it big by harnessing the power of the Internet. Alexis Petridis, music critic for the Guardian newspaper, called “Favourite Worst Nightmare” arguably the most anticipated second album in a decade. Judging by early reviews and the reaction of fans at gigs across the country,… Read more »

Avril, Christina's Multiple Personalities

What’s up with all the different versions of Avril in her new video? Or, for that matter, Christina, Ciara and Beyoncé? Everywhere you look, it seems some pop diva has replicated herself so she’s the star of her clip several times over. Multiple versions are nothing new – Mariah and Madonna are old pros by now – but the idea has been spreading like a video virus, with Avril and others just the latest to be infected. It got us to thinking – are they copying themselves or someone else? Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” Avril Lavigne gets to have it both… Read more »

Good Charlotte Returns Today

Many acts avoid reading reviews of their albums for fear one sour critic will reduce their noble efforts to rubble. Good Charlotte’s Benji Madden is not one of those artists. “I read all the reviews,” he says. “I remember the first review I ever read about our band was ‘They’ll be gone tomorrow; they’ll be gone quicker than they came.’” Seven years and more than 9 million albums later, pop punkers Good Charlotte are not only still standing, but proudly proclaiming a return three years after the release of 2004’s “The Chronicles of Life & Death.” “Ben said something a… Read more »

Arctic Monkeys drop media-shy stance for new CD

The sophomore slump. Second-year blues. The “difficult” second album. None of these phrases are in Alex Turner’s vocabulary. As frontman for the Arctic Monkeys, one of Britain’s most successful and important bands of the decade, Turner is unfazed by the pitfalls of following up a zeitgeist-shaping debut. “Was it a difficult album to record? No,” Turner says from Milan, in the midst of a promotional tour, “because ever since we finished the first album (in September 2005), we’ve been writing songs for this one. So it wasn’t like a rush at the last minute.” Nonetheless, things have changed in Monkeyworld.… Read more »

Pete Wentz Look-Alikes Descend on Austin for SXSW

AUSTIN, Texas – Every March, the music industry throws on a pair of shorts, slathers on the SPF 45 and heads on down to Austin for South by Southwest, a weeklong celebration of bands, BBQ and (sometimes free!) beer. It’s a brutal bacchanal and music marathon powered by thousands of acts playing in hundreds of venues – at all hours – plus an unreal number of open-bar tabs and fancy private parties. Sleep is not exactly a top priority, so MTV News has dispatched three of its most tireless reporters into the fray. They’ll be filing reports a few times… Read more »

Australian concert flag ban sparks anger

Fears of race clashes on Monday led organizers of Australia’s biggest outdoor rock concert to bar fans from carrying the national flag, sparking a furious reaction from the country’s prime minister and war veterans. After fights between ethnic Croatian and Serbian fans outside the Australian Open tennis tournament last week and 2005 race clashes on Sydney’s beaches, Big Day Out concert organizers said Australia’s flag was a “gang color” which could incite hatred. “It was racism disguised as patriotism and I’m not going to tolerate it,” event producer Ken West told Australian newspapers. The concert Web site said the flag… Read more »

Pete Wentz On Brawl: 'I'm Not Gonna Let My Friends Fight Alone'

One week after he leapt into the crowd and began wailing on a security guard at the Sunshine Theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz is still a little bit sore, a little bit embarrassed and – in what might be a first – a little bit wary of talking about the incident. But that isn’t stopping his bandmates from giving their accounts of the punch-up, which occurred while FOB was playing the final song of their set during last weekend’s gig at the Sunshine . “I was standing on a riser, stage left, and I… Read more »

V2 Restructured, White Stripes, Moby Become Free Agents

Sheridan Square has basically shuttered its frontline V2 record business as part of restructuring to focus on its catalog releases and the future opportunities presented by digital distribution. On January 12, the company let go its V2 staff, including president Andy Gershon, and will reorganize the business in its Nashville office, where the company’s COO Michael Olsen will oversee the catalog business. About 35 people are believed to have lost their jobs as part of the restructuring. As part of that move, the company will retain the White Stripes catalog, but will no longer issue new music by the duo… Read more »

Behind The Scenes w/ Fall Out Boy

The quartet’s comfort in La-La Land has nothing to do with the Hollywood parties they’ve been frequenting and everything to do with the vibe of their long-awaited new album, ‘Infinity on High.’ Though ‘Infinity’ was born in the San Fernando Valley suburb just a few exits from Hollywood off the 101 freeway (“We’re a Burbank type of band,” bassist Pete Wentz says), the unique characteristic of Tinseltown was an unavoidable subject matter for the new album. “This is one of the best places to observe people,” he says. “And the interesting part about it is that Hollywood’s not actually, like,… Read more »
