American Hi-Fi Reveal All Of Their Personalities

American Hi-Fi lead singer Stacy Jones says that with their new album hitting stores the band feel like they’ve finally found themselves. But when asked to explain further, Jones admits defining the band isn’t that easy. “We’re a schizophrenic band for sure,” Jones says, while taking a break from their current tour with Bowling For Soup. “I mean there’s no denying that. To me, that’s the best thing to be because we like so many different types of bands. We’ll say ‘Let’s do that ELO -type of part on this song’ or ‘Let’s do that like Squeeze might do’ or… Read more »

Who Wants Satellite Radio?

Columbus, Oh – With all the recent buzz about satellite radio resulting from the defection of terrestrial radio talent, like Howard Stern, 18-34 year olds are the satellite providers #1 age group for current subscribers and also for those planning on buying in the next 6 months according to BIGresearch’s March Consumer Intentions and Actions survey of over 7,000 consumers. The satellite radio questions were developed in collaboration with MarketStar. However, it appears that for those 35 plus, the majority say they don’t plan on buying/subscribing to satellite radio at this time. These age groups also tend to be less… Read more »

New York – Inside the giant factory of cool known as MTV headquarters, a crew of hip twentysomethings has been hard at work creating a two-headed monster. This beast wants to be man’s new best friend. On Sunday, during the Super Bowl halftime, MTV2 is relaunching with a new focus on 12-24 year-old guys – and a new logo. This silhouette of a dog with two heads (you may have seen the intentionally vague posters) is at the center of the new MTV2. The revamped network will maintain most of its current music programming, bonded with swirling graphics and constant… Read more »

MTV Promos Keep Music Flame Lit

New York – At a time when reality and youth lifestyle shows – not videos – dominate MTV’s main programming hours, the network is looking to music-related contests, tour sponsorships and other off-channel marketing initiatives to drive its identity as a music brand. Case in point: MTV in February is sending eight contest winners on a private island getaway with Columbia Records act Destiny’s Child in a stunt it is billing as Destiny’s Isle. The promotion – which MTV has been plotting since last August and was aggressively promoting last fall – will culminate with clips from an afternoon meeting… Read more »

Nashville – Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell will make his first foray into the Christian music market next fall when he releases his debut solo album. Littrell is talking to producers, but hasn’t nailed anyone down. He does have some songwriters in mind, though. “I would like to collaborate with Michael W. Smith,” he says. “We’ve been talking about that for years, and now we can start getting these things in motion. I’m looking for outside stuff, and I’ve got a lot of material in my head as well.” Littrell, who grew up attending a Baptist church with his family in… Read more »

Bright Eyes Go A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Techno

Nelly had a fair amount of success earlier this fall when he suckered his fans into buying not one, but two new albums on the same day: the party-pumping Sweat and the slow-jammin’ Suit. You’ve got to have some moxy to pull off the two separate albums released on the same day trick (Guns N’ Roses and Tom Waits – who’ve both pulled it off – aren’t exactly your typical artists). If anything, Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst has moxy. The indie rock heartthrob will not only release two albums on the same day (January 25), but he’s planning to launch… Read more »

Scott Weiland Misses The Memo On When To Make Political Statements

Scott Weiland has secured himself a spot as the very last celebrity to speak out about today’s U.S. presidential election. A little late in the game, the singer – famous for Stone Temple Pilots, taking a whole lot of drugs, and now Velvet Revolver – posted an anti-Bush message on his band’s website last night. Yep, last night. The night before the election. As part of his lengthy statement, Weiland defended his late arrival on the political scene: “If you’re asking, ‘Why did you post this now? The day of?’ It’s because I want it to be the last thing… Read more »

Lazarus, Like Trees We Grow Up To Be Satellites – CD Review

Like Trees We Grow Up To Be Satellites (The Backwards America) (Temporary Residence/Sonic Unyon) Just in case you were growing weary with the increasing glut of neo-folksters championing the “quiet is the new loud!” campaign, William Trevor Montgomery has arrived to keep you interested. While his Lazarus project is essentially a folk album at heart, it actually tries hard not to be one. The first third exhibits the usual delicately plucked acoustic numbers and aching vocals, but once “The Poet Of Emptiness” rolls around, the quasi-electronic, atmospheric elements of Montgomery’s music slowly start to reveal themselves. Tape loops, samples, piano… Read more »
