Sonic Youth Dig Through Vaults

In addition to the release of their new album, Murray Street, next month, Sonic Youth have begun work on a trio of reissues, the first of which, Dirty, is scheduled for release this summer. The band has been pouring through unreleased demos and songs for the series, which will see Dirty, Daydream Nation and Goo remastered and reissued with new liner notes and a bonus CD of new material. “It’s pretty much together,” singer-guitarist Thurston Moore says of the new Dirty. “We weren’t too interested in putting live stuff on there; it would take forever to go through it. But… Read more »

McCartney Blocks 'Hey Jude' Lyrics Sale

Former Beatle Paul McCartney won a last-minute court order yesterday (April 29) preventing the auction house Christie’s from selling his handwritten lyrics to the song “Hey Jude.” The sheet of note paper with the scrawled lyrics had been expected to fetch up to $116,000 at an auction scheduled for today, but McCartney took the matter to the High Court, claiming the piece had disappeared from his home. The lyrics will remain at Christie’s London headquarters until ownership is decided by agreement or a trial. Richard Meade, a lawyer for McCartney, said the sheet of paper with the lyrics was either… Read more »

Inside The White Stripes' 'Girl' Video Block Party

Remember how psyched you were as a kid to build a little car or a castle out of Lego pieces? Bet you never fashioned a fully functioning punk-rock duo and a kaleidoscopic world where they could swim, ride bikes and whale on the drums, though, did you? Don’t feel bad. You probably never got that sophisticated, but pioneering director Michel Gondry did, thanks to the White Stripes. In the eye-popping video for “Fell in Love With a Girl,” a two-minute blast of O.P.P.-like fantasy, the candy-colored pair from Detroit strum, jump and sprint their way through a building-block realm that… Read more »

Foos' Dave Grohl, Moby Are Bowie Buddies On New LP

For his new album, Heathen, David Bowie has gotten a little “Modern Love” from the likes of Dave Grohl, Moby and Air. Elsewhere on the studio successor to the chameleon of rock’s 1999 album, Hours…, Who guitarist Pete Townshend lends a lick to “Slow Burn,” which Bowie described in a statement as “the most eccentric and aggressive guitar I’ve heard Pete play, quite unlike anything else he’s done recently.” The last time Townshend and Bowie collaborated was on… Read more »

Composer Addresses Eminem Suit

“I only heard it quite recently,” says French composer Jacques Loussier. “In fact, my son had heard it and told me that was my music played on this record, so that is why I’ve been listening to it. And, of course, it’s so obvious that it was a copy of my music.” Loussier is speaking of Eminem’s “Kill You,” a track from the rapper’s 8 million-copy selling The Marshall Mathers LP that Loussier claims contains music lifted from his own composition, “Pulsion.” Loussier filed suit against the rapper and Interscope Records last week in federal court in New York City,… Read more »
