Judging by the number of cars bearing Canada license plates around Michigan State University’s Breslin Center on Tuesday, it was clear that Vancouver’s Nickelback were going to feel right at home. Fans waved maple-leaf flags around the venue before the Campus Invasion show, which also featured performances by Starsailor, Injected and Nickelback protégées Default. While concert ticket sales have begun to rebound for top-level acts since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, it’s the medium-range and niche bands that have felt the pinch and are likely to suffer further, industry insiders said. Ticket sales for such mainstream acts as Madonna, U2, Elton John, Bob Dylan and Jimmy Buffett continue to be strong, while tours catering to a niche teen demographic are not selling as well. Sting has announced initial concert dates in support of his upcoming live album, All This Time, due November 20. The singer-songwriter is set to play a half-dozen shows across the country, beginning on December 6 at New York’s Beacon Theatre, according to his official website (sting.com).
