"Chinese Democracy" shows limits of retail exclusives

When Wal-Mart sold 784,000 copies of AC/DC’s ” Black Ice ” during the album’s first week in stores, many label executives believed that more superstars would release albums exclusively through big-box retailers. And when Best Buy experienced disappointing sales of Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy,” some of those same executives thought, well, maybe not. “Chinese Democracy” (Interscope), the rock act’s first album of all-new material in 17 years, sold 261,000 units in its first week of availability, according to Nielsen SoundScan That included sales at Best Buy, exclusive digital retailer iTunes and other stores selling import versions of the album.… Read more »

John Legend performs at the Democratic convention

Wolf Blitzer is a John Legend fan. After CNN aired a live performance of Legend’s new song, “If You’re Out There,” from the floor of the Democratic National Convention, Blitzer promised to continue to interrupt the network’s reporting or analysis for musical acts as good as Legend. Legend was the most visible of the entertainers who flowed into Denver for the convention, which opened Monday. A choir backed him for the song that fits neatly with Barack Obama’s campaign themes. “We’ve been looking for the world to change,” Legend sang. “If you’re out there, sing along with me. Stand up… Read more »

Gerard Way Speaks About Anti-Emo Violence In Mexico

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has spoken directly to fans about the problem of anti-emo related violence in Mexico. Tensions have escalated in the country over recent months with a series of reported attacks against people who have “an emo look”. Addressing the audience at Zero Fest in Mexico City last Saturday (April 12th), Way said the band no longer wanted to see “any fucking violence”. “I want to say something today before we continue. Recently we’ve been hearing a lot of stuff about some violence here in your country having to do with kids who want to wear… Read more »

The Democratization of the Music Industry

As I write this, iTunes ranks as the 2nd largest seller of music in the U.S. — only Wal-Mart’s physical stores sell more. Digital revenue is real, and there is a lot of it being earned. Sales from iTunes alone can provide a band enough revenue to achieve true financial success. Don’t take my word for it, just look at some of the sales by the following unsigned artists utilizing the Net for both digital distribution and marketing: Kelly sold over 500,000 songs in five months, Eric Hutchinson sold 120,000 songs in three weeks, The Medic Droid sold over 25,000… Read more »

“High School Musical” star Zac Efron underwent emergency surgery Tuesday to remove his appendix, his publicist said. The 20-year-old actor had the operation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Gina Hoffman said. Efron became a teen heartthrob with his starring role as Troy Bolton in the hit Disney Channel TV movie “High School Musical” and its sequel. He also starred in the film “Hairspray.” He was hospitalized a day after Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Productions announced that he and his five “High School Musical” co-stars had signed on to appear in the theatrical film “High School Musical 3:… Read more »

Foo Fighters Haven't Gone Emo

Dave Grohl has been in the rock business for more than 20 years now, and during that time, he’s seen many so-called “musical movements” come and go. Thus, he’s particularly amused by the current generation of emo-punk acts bounding across stages worldwide. After all, he’s been doing this for so long that he remembers emo the first time it came around.”I have a funny relationship with emo,” he said. “I’m from Washington, D.C., and in the mid-’80s, the hardcore scene changed from what it was – Bad Brains and Minor Threat and the Dead Kennedys and MDC – to a… Read more »

Emo-Punk: Hair Metal's Second Coming

Recently, Maureen Callahan wrote a piece for the New York Post about Crush Management, the NYC cadre that shepherds the careers of Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, the Academy Is … , Boys Like Girls and Armor for Sleep (or, as Callahan puts it, “basically any band that a 13-year-old girl with a blog and a Hot Topic habit obsesses over”). Aside from providing readers with some genuinely bananas quotes from songwriter/ rock-and-roll vampire Butch Walker about credibility (especially considering this is on his résumé), the article is excellent primarily because it floats the hypothesis that the artists… Read more »

Lance Bass Writes `Out of Sync' Memoir

Lance Bass “tells all about his life, his music and his sexuality” in an upcoming autobiography, the publisher announced Wednesday. “Out of Sync” is scheduled for publication in October, said Simon Spotlight Entertainment, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. The publisher promises a behind-the-scenes look at the 27-year-old singer’s days in boy band ‘N Sync, as well as his headline-making venture to undergo astronaut training for a Russian space mission, which didn’t pan out because he couldn’t come up with the funds for the trip. Bass announced in July that he is gay. He has said that he didn’t reveal… Read more »
