White Stripes, Metallica, Strokes To Play On New Year's Eve

What will the White Stripes, the Strokes, Metallica and Phish be doing this New Year’s Eve? They’ll be doing what they do best – standing onstage with their instruments, playing music for their fans. Other major artists who have scheduled New Year’s Eve appearances include Jane’s Addiction, Marilyn Manson, the Used, 3 Doors Down, Andrew W.K., the Flaming Lips, Kings of Leon and David Lee Roth. Las Vegas will be the city that parties the hardest. It will offer 13 shows by artists such as the Strokes with Kings of Leon, Metallica, Goo Goo Dolls, Marky Ramone, REO Speedwagon with… Read more »

Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs Say 'YES New York'

New York’s finest new rock acts will be anthologized on “YES New York,” a 15-track collection due June 3 from Wolfgang Morden, the soundtrack imprint of Vice Records. The album kicks off with a previously unreleased live version of the Strokes’ “New York City Cops” recorded in Iceland, and concludes with an acoustic version of “Our Time” performed by Unitard, a side project of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. “As transplants to New York, we had spent a decade watching the New York rock scene kinda suck with too many Heartbreaker wannabes and noisy sound-alikes,” executive producers Chris White and Brian… Read more »

Sum 41 Spoof Strokes, Stripes, Vines In 'Still Waiting' Video

With songs like “Fat Lip” and “Motivation,” Sum 41 developed a reputation for cheekiness and tomfoolery. Their new album doesn’t exactly transform them into tree-hugging environmentalists or pulpit-preaching activists, but it shows the bandmembers leaning toward maybe growing up just a little… kinda. Many songs on Does This Look Infected?, due November 26, aren’t about downing brews, scamming chicks or teenage angst. Instead, Sum 41 singer and lyricist Deryck Whibley addresses issues a little more sobering. “I guess I watched too much CNN while making this record,” he said. “Also, I guess I’m getting older. When you’re young you have… Read more »

'Jackass' Band CKY Hang Guitarist, Denounce Hives, Strokes

There’s a line in the CKY song “Escape From Hellview” that goes, “I’m on the loose with my neck in the noose/ But hey, I enjoy the intense.” So when they picked up cameras to shoot a video for the tune, they decided it would be cool to hang guitarist Chad Ginsburg from a tree. It almost became the last stunt Ginsburg would ever pull. Since the grass-roots band self-financed the shoot on a meager budget, the only stunt coordinator they could afford turned out to be unqualified. The harness he tied around Ginsburg wasn’t secure enough, and the guitarist… Read more »

Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Blur’s Damon Albarn, Beck, the Neptunes, and the Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi are among the judges for the 2002 Shortlist Music Prize, which spotlights lesser-known acts for their artistic merit. Others musicians accepting the role as so-called “listmakers” for the second annual Shortlist are Mos Def, Paul Oakenfold, Iggy Pop, Jill Scott, the Roots’ Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon. They are joined by directors Baz Lurhman and Spike Jonze, producers Dan “The Automator” Nakamura (Gorillaz) and Gustavo Santaolalla (Cafe Tacuba), as well as journalists and radio personalities. Hives, Strokes Bring Fun Back to Rock

Pelle Almqvist never could understand the connection between loud guitars and being miserable. You’re up on a stage jumping around, making a loud noise with women adoringly gazing at you. What’s not to like? “It’s just such a naturally exciting and fun thing,” said Almqvist, lead singer of the Swedish rock band the Hives. Acts like the Hives, White Stripes, the Strokes and the Vines are leading a new vanguard with a raw, adrenalized sound best described as garage rock. And after a decade dominated by dense, morose grunge or the angry rants of Limp Bizkit and its sound-alikes, rock… Read more »

Strokes Say No Thanks To Big-Name Producers, Directors

The Strokes may be the “it” band of the moment, but don’t expect them to be lining up studio sessions with “it” producers like Glen Ballard or the Neptunes. When the New York garage-rockers begin recording their second album later this summer, Is This It producer Gordon Raphael will again be behind the boards. “It’s not gonna be like, ‘Oh, now that we’re successful, we’re gonna work with all these super-producer guys that are going to make us a top-selling hit,’ ” singer Julian Casablancas said backstage at Saturday’s KROQ Weenie Roast. “That’s never been the goal for us. We… Read more »

White Stripes Choose 'Dead Leaves,' Will Play With Strokes

Detroit blooze duo the White Stripes have chosen “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” as the third single from their latest album, White Blood Cells. The tale of woe, composed of sluggish verses that explode into a rough-hewn, feedback-tweaked chorus, follows previous cuts “Hotel Yorba” and “Fell in Love With a Girl.” A video for the song will be shot by Michel Gondry, according to a spokesperson for V2 Records. Gondry, who has directed groundbreaking clips for Björk, Cibo Matto and Radiohead, was the visual artist responsible for the living Lego style of the Stripes’ “Fell in Love With a… Read more »

Weezer Hitting Sheds With Dashboard Confessional, Strokes

When drummer Pat Wilson described Weezer’s latest live show tendencies recently, he separately mentioned Neil Diamond, Spinal Tap, Tool and Phish in a matter of minutes. Needless to say, the band’s summer tour should be interesting. Dates have not been announced, but Wilson and frontman Rivers Cuomo said Weezer will spend six weeks hitting amphitheaters across America with Dashboard Confessional beginning in mid-July. The Stokes will also join the bill on a couple of dates. “It’s gonna be awesome,” Wilson said. “The sound just goes. In an arena, it sounds stupid, but when we hear stuff and it goes out… Read more »
