Rolling Stone Founder in Rock Fame Hall

Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement in the nonperformer category, the museum foundation said. “Due to Wenner’s vision, Rolling Stone uniquely contributed to the perpetuation and popularity of rock and roll with thoughtful, in-depth and often controversial coverage that legitimized rock’s contribution,” the New York City-based foundation said Monday. “Rolling Stone’s unprecedented access to major artists put the magazine in a class of its own.” Wenner co-founded Rolling Stone with writer Ralph J. Gleason in 1967. He will be inducted along with performers George Harrison, Prince,… Read more »

Rolling Stone Gives Journalist a Chance

Stephen Glass, a writer who was fired from the New Republic magazine for fabricating stories, is being given another chance by Rolling Stone, another magazine he wrote for. Glass has been assigned a story on Canadian marijuana laws, Stu Zakim, a spokesman for the magazine, said Monday. The assignment was first reported by New York magazine. A previous story that Glass wrote for Rolling Stone resulted in a lawsuit. D.A.R.E, an anti-drug program, sued the magazine in 1999 over Glass’s story about the group, part of which he admitted making up. Zakim said Rolling Stone owner Jann Wenner felt it… Read more »

Rolling Stones Postpone Hong Kong Shows

The Rolling Stones have postponed two upcoming shows in Hong Kong because of a mystery illness outbreak in the territory. The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS – which has killed 10 and sickened hundreds in Hong Kong – prompted the Stones to push back concerts that had been scheduled for Friday and Saturday, the rock band said in a statement. “Increases in the number of cases of SARS in Hong Kong and Southern China and continued concern over large gatherings have created apprehension among fans and concern for their safety,” the Stones said Wednesday. No dates have… Read more »

Rolling Stones Give Free Concert

With nary a Hells Angels member or flying pool cue in sight, the Rolling Stones played their first free concert in 33 years on Thursday, as a celebrity crowd headed by former U.S. President Bill Clinton looked on. The event at the Staples Center was a considerably more sedate affair than their last free show, at the Altamont Speedway near San Francisco in 1969. Then, security was handled by the local Hells Angels chapter, who clubbed fans with pool cues while the band looked on helplessly. A teenager was stabbed to death as he appeared to point a gun at… Read more »

Rolling Stones To Perform Live on HBO

After nearly 40 years of playing “Satisfaction,” aren’t the Rolling Stones a bit sick of it? Really, they aren’t. Keith Richards and Ron Wood say it’s a great song and it takes on a different meaning every time they play it. “Of course, there are nights where you want to throw the set list out the window,” Mick Jagger said. “But up to a point, people want to hear certain things. But you don’t want to just play those, you want to play other things. Richards and Jagger said they don’t think young people are giving up on rock. “No,… Read more »

Rolling Stones Would Have No Chance Today

The Rolling Stones would have no chance on the music market if they were to start as newcomers today, the band’s former bassist Bill Wyman said on Wednesday. Wyman, who left the Rolling Stones after the band’s 30th anniversary 10 years ago, said record companies would no longer sign people whose style was different to that of the charts. “That’s why many talented young people don’t have a chance. The Rolling Stones would be too different today. They were different then but in those days the record companies and the media were open to new ideas,” Wyman told Reuters in… Read more »
