AC/DC Shuns iTunes with New Release

For those about to rock, AC/DC salutes you. Unless, that is, you want to buy the Australian heavy metal group's newest album, "Black Ice," on iTunes, or anywhere but Wal-Mart when it drops in record stores on October 20. "Maybe I'm just being old-fashioned, but this iTunes, God bless 'em, it's going to kill music if they're not careful," lead singer Brian Johnson, 61, told Reuters. AC/DC, formed by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young in 1973, is among only a handful of musicians to refuse to put their music on the popular download website in a move that Johnson defended… Read more »

Hell's Bells! AC/DC Singer Working On Musical

Brian Johnson is writing music and lyrics these days, but not for AC/DC or any other rock band. He’s working with British composer Brendan Healy and Sarasota Ballet Artistic Director Robert de Warren on a musical called “Helen of Troy,” an action-filled love story based on Greek mythology. While in past years Johnson has specialized in penning naughty double-entendres in songs like “Hard as a Rock,” “Stiff Upper Lip” and “The Honey Roll,” this time he’s crafting music that’s more in line with the dramatic musical “Les Misérables.” So far, he’s written 14 songs for the production, which will debut… Read more »

Australian Rockers INXS Struggle Without Singer

For the first time in almost four years, one of Australia’s most successful rock bands, INXS, is playing a few shows in North America. But the crowd at their recent Los Angeles stop consisted of about 70 Rhino Records employees and a few reporters, just two of the band’s six members were on stage, and the bespectacled singer looked nothing like Michael Hutchence, the group’s charismatic vocalist. Hutchence committed suicide in November 1997, and his bandmates are having a hard time deciding whether to carry on. In the meantime, they have released a two-CD anthology, “Shine Like It Does,” via… Read more »

AC/DC'S Angus Young Spotted In Miniskirt

The scene onstage at Jimmy Z’s is unmistakable: the singer is screeching “Sin City,” right hand on the mic, left hand cocked at the side like it might just fire bullets from the fingers drawn in a heavy metal devil salute. Several feet away, the guitarist’s head is in a non-stop nod to the beat; a schoolboy necktie squirms under a burgundy Gibson SG. Uh, but wait a minute… this Angus Young is wearing a miniskirt. And the person rocking the spotlight isn’t a middle-aged Aussie man, but a twentysomething African-American woman. Ding dong, welcome to the world of Hell’s… Read more »
