Summer Tour Affirms Metallica's Drawing Power

Making a case for hard music, stadium tours in general and Metallica’s own status as a headliner, Summer Sanitarium 2003 goes down as a winner, taking in $46.4 million and drawing 683,472 headbangers to 19 dates. The tour reaffirms the box-office clout of Metallica, which is currently in the planning stages of an extensive headlining tour next year, tentatively set to begin in March. Metallica last toured in 2000, taking in $40.5 million from only 20 shows. About a dozen of those concerts were Summer Sanitarium dates, featuring Kid Rock, Korn and others. This year’s Summer Sanitarium lineup featured Limp… Read more »

Nickelback's Kroeger Turns To Metallica, Motley Crue For Help With LP

Chad Kroeger can’t take all the credit for the songs on Nickelback’s new album, The Long Road. He had some help from Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi. No, James Hetfield, Vince Neil and Steven Tyler didn’t actually show up in Vancouver at Little Mountain studio. Nor did they send Kroeger music or vocal parts. But their presence was clearly felt through the studio board, which played host to rock legends through the ’80s and ’90s. “Mötley Crüe’s Dr. Feelgood was recorded on it,” said Kroeger, “and Aerosmith did a couple records on it including Pump. And Bon Jovi… Read more »

Metallica Kill 'Em All At New York Club Show – Review

Just when some old-school Metallica fans were ready to write the band off for crafting St. Anger – which prominently features a snare drum that sounds like a screwdriver hitting a trashcan – and for playing snippets of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and Lenny Kravitz’s “Are you Gonna Go My Way” at the VMAs, the band has redeemed itself. OK, they were doing fine before the VMAs. Few who attended Metallica’s Summer Sanitarium concerts walked away disappointed. The tour featured the band in peak form, bashing out its oldest and heaviest songs. However, a show on Friday for fan club… Read more »

Metallica Rock Leeds Gently

Marred by fiery riots a year ago, the Leeds leg of Britain’s Carling Weekend made a sold-out, subdued and sunny return this weekend. Metallica, Linkin Park, Staind, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, AFI, the Polyphonic Spree, Hot Hot Heat, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, the Libertines, Blink-182, the Cooper Temple Clause, Death in Vegas, the Streets and many others played the open-air arena and three tents at the festival’s new site, Bramham Park. Fifty thousand people were on hand each of the weekend’s three days, but police reported that only twenty-seven arrests were made this year – in contrast to the chaos… Read more »

Metallica: Rob Trujillo's Still A Fan

Raving about the new guy: ages-old process where rock bands make the fresh blood feel comfortable and entirely loved as they and the person in question stroke each other’s fur in front of the intense examination of press and/or public. Ages-old thrashers-cum-rockers-cum-thrashers again Metallica proved to be no strangers to this tradition as they unveiled their latest bass player Robert Trujillo to Toronto at the Summer Sanitarium tour. “The quality of musicianship in the band nowadays is so high! Rob’s a killer bass player so it’s awesome to jam with him. It feels so natural to be jamming in a… Read more »

Metallica To Film Video For 'Frantic'

Metallica’s Summer Sanitarium Tour touched down in Montreal’s Parc Jean Drapeau this past Sunday (July 20) and since there wasn’t another Summer Sanitarium date booked until this Friday (July 25) in St. Louis, the band decided to put the time off to good use. On Monday (July 21), Metallica began shooting the video for their next single from St. Anger, the album’s lead-off track titled “Frantic,” in the suburbs of Montreal. Wayne Isham, best known for his video work with the Rolling Stones, is directing the new clip. Isham previously worked with Metallica on their videos for “Enter Sandman,” “Sad… Read more »

Metallica Bask In The Love Of Sanitarium

Folks who have checked into this year’s Summer Sanitarium have noted how all the opening bands are singing praises to Metallica. Limp Bizkit even cover “(Welcome Home) Sanitarium” and flash the words “Metallica is the sh-” onscreen during their set. Such over-the-top idol worship might seem a bit forced, but the headliners insist it’s not. And the admiration goes both ways. “The highlight for me is just the vibe between the bands,” drummer Lars Ulrich said during the Philadelphia stop of the tour right after spending 30 minutes hanging out with Linkin Park. “Sometimes when you play these big places… Read more »
