Lollapalooza Music Fest Is Chicago Bound

Los Angeles – Lollapalooza – a marquee touring festival of the 1990s that fell on commercial hard times last year – is returning this year in drastically scaled-down form. Lollapalooza ’05 will run July 23-24 in Chicago’s Grant Park. The band lineup will not be announced until the third week in April. The festival Web site (www.lollapalooza.com) will go live Friday. Lollapalooza began life in 1991 as a major vehicle for the exposure of left-field rock talent. A highly successful summer touring proposition in the early ’90s, it took a five-year hiatus from 1998-2002, as other treks like the Vans… Read more »

Lollapalooza Canceled; Organizers Cite Poor Ticket Sales

Three weeks prior to kickoff, Lollapalooza has been canceled. Organizers cited poor ticket sales as the reason the 31-date, 16-city trek was called off. This year’s lineup was set to include Morrissey, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, the Flaming Lips and the String Cheese Incident. “My heart aches along with the bands and all of our employees, whose hard work developed one of the most exciting and important tours that this nation was to see,” read a statement from Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell. “My heart is broken.” The decision to scrap Lollapalooza was made Monday evening (June 21), when organizers and… Read more »

Lollapalooza 2003 Rolling After Early Setbacks

The Jane’s Addiction-headlined Lollapalooza tour is rolling along after overcoming a few bumps at the beginning of the tour. Lollapalooza had to cancel both its opening date-which was scheduled for June 3 in Ionia, Michigan-and a July 26 date at Vernon Downs racetrack just outside of New York City due to poor ticket sales and some production issues. The tour has run smoothly since, and guitarist Dave Navarro revealed he didn’t know why the tour had trouble in the beginning, considering how well it’s going now. “Yeah, this is going great,” Navarro said. “Honestly, you’re asking me a lot of… Read more »

Lollapalooza To Tour Europe?

Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell has the desire to bring his reprised Lollapalooza festival to Europe, but says there are a few glitches that would make it difficult to deliver the same high-quality show American fans are currently enjoying. Farrell, who also fronts this year’s Lollapalooza headlining band Jane’s Addiction, revealed that there are two problems that stand in the way of taking the festival to Europe-the line-up and the technology kinks that would crop up with the interactive part of the festival. “We have ambitions to be there, but once you jump across the pond, the quality changes,” Farrell said.… Read more »

Slow Ticket Sales Doom Lollapalooza Show

Slow ticket sales and increased production costs led promoters to cancel the Lollapalooza rock festival scheduled this month for Vernon Downs racetrack in central New York. The July 26 concert was to feature Jane’s Addiction, Audioslave, the Donnas, Queens of the Stone Age, Incubus and Jurassic 5. “Due to the costs of production versus the estimated tickets sales of 15,000, it did not make fiscal sense to play this date,” said a statement issued Wednesday. “Unfortunately, the venue is such that Lollapalooza would have needed to bring in additional production facilities, which made the cost to produce the Syracuse-area show… Read more »
