Rage Against The Machine played its first show in seven years last night (April 29) to close the 2007 edition of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. The foursome tore into staples like “Testify,” “Bulls on Parade,” “People of the Sun” and “Guerrilla Radio” to one of the largest main stage crowds in the event’s history. In addition to its always eclectic, star-studded lineup, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has established a reputation for frequently landing the hotly sought return of a major indie-rock figurehead. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times , this year’s major coup is a reunion of thrashing political rockers Rage Against the Machine, who have not played together for seven years. The band is expected to get together for a one-off headlining show at the eighth edition of the three-day festival, which they last played in 1999. After a pre-summer breakdown, the Machine is again operating at full steam. Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk are back in a Los Angeles studio with former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell working on material for an upcoming album, a spokesperson at Epic Records said. The group, which originally called itself Civilian, is now considering using the moniker Audioslave, but there is still no title or release date for the upcoming album. DMX and members of Rage Against the Machine recently collaborated together, and no, the result is not called “Communist Party up in Here.” “I got a rock joint,” X bragged recently. “I did two songs with Rage Against the Machine. One song is ‘We Gonna Get It Right,’ and the other one is ‘Here I Come.’ I only met one of [the group members]. When they finish the Projekt Revolution Tour, which also features Linkin Park, Cypress Hill and DJ Z-Trip, Adema will join Alien Ant Farm, Fenix TX, Glassjaw and others on the already-in-progress SnoCore Festival, which runs until March 30. After that, the band will likely tour on its own through the end of the year. Reunited rock band Rage Against The Machine will be one of the headliners at the third annualVegoose Music Festival, set for October 28-29 in Las Vegas, sources said. Vegoose producers declined to comment on specific artists booked for the show at Sam Boyd Stadium, but said an official lineup will be announced in mid-July. Rage ended a seven-year hiatus in April when it played the Coachella festival in southern California.
