Nirvana Bassist To Rock No More

Nirvana co-founder Krist Novoselic is packing up his instrument following the universal apathy displayed for Eyes Adrift, the alt-country band he formed in late 2001 with Meat Puppets guitarist Curt Kirkwood and Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh. “I quit,” he wrote in a post on the band’s official Web site. “I can’t deal. I can’t read the magazines, listen to the radio or watch music television without feeling like I’ve just come in from outer space. I just don’t get it and I probably never did.” Novoselic’s frustrations stem from being typecast as a hard rock performer, and from the recent… Read more »

Embattled Nirvana Track Surfaces Online As Hits LP Nears Release

Kurt Cobain fans are closer to Nirvana than they have been in years. A studio version of the unreleased Nirvana track “You Know You’re Right” has surfaced online in its entirety. The song, which was reportedly recorded in January 1994, less than three months before frontman Cobain took his own life with a shotgun in his Seattle home, is expected to a appear on the long-awaited Nirvana greatest-hits album, which, according to Courtney Love, is due by Christmas. A Universal Music Group spokesperson, however, said that while the LP would come out, there was no specific release date. By Monday… Read more »

Courtney Love Trial Postponed, Talks Continue

A trial in a closely watched breach of contract case pitting rock star Courtney Love against Universal Music was postponed on Tuesday as the two sides continue talks to reach an out-of-court settlement. Sources familiar with talks said the case is likely to be resolved, rendering a trial unlikely. Officials for Universal Music, the world’s biggest record company and a unit of Vivendi Universal, declined comment. Love’s attorney, Barry Cappello, also declined comment. The case’s roots date back to December 1999 when Love, the widow of Nirvana’s late bandleader Kurt Cobain, decided to stop recording for Geffen, a unit of… Read more »

Nirvana Song 'You Know You're Right' May See Release By Year's End

Courtney Love, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic continue to bump heads about a lot of things, but attorneys for both sides say all three musicians think the unreleased Nirvana song “You Know You’re Right” should be in the hands of the band’s fans. They’re aiming to issue it on a Nirvana best-of collection by the end of the year, and the compilation will be followed by a box set of rarities, then a single best-of-the-box CD. That’s if all goes well. If all does not go well, we may not get anything, as efforts to release the material could be… Read more »

Dave Grohl Says Nirvana Legal Battle Not Worth The Anguish

The Courtney Love vs. Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic case is on its way to court, and in late September the world should know more about the fate of unreleased Nirvana material. But Grohl is beginning to question whether all the legal mumbo jumbo is worth the hassle. In April the surviving members of Nirvana asked that Love be forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to test her sanity, and later in the month a judge denied the request, causing Grohl to bang his head against the wall as forcefully as he pummels his drum kit. “At the end of… Read more »

Snippets Of Nirvana Song At Center Of Lawsuit Appear Online

Portions of the last recorded Nirvana track surfaced online this week, bringing a new twist to the legal debate between Courtney Love and Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. Live bootlegs of “You Know You’re Right” have circulated for years, but until now the studio version has gone mostly unheard. (Love spun the song at a London club in March and provided part of it to “Access Hollywood.”) Although she claims to possess more than 100 tapes of unheard material from the late Kurt Cobain, “You Know You’re Right” has been singled out as a huge potential hit by Love and… Read more »

Courtney on Unheard Cobain Songs

“I have a buttload of material,” says Courtney Love of the archive of unreleased material by Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. “I have the holy grail of rock & roll. That’s the story.” There are 109 tapes. “But not all of it’s great. Some of it’s fragments.” She thinks there are between five and eight “solidly good,” unheard acoustic songs. “There’s some stuff that’s not very melodic that I’m not fond of, but, hey, if you’re a fan of [Radiohead’s] Kid A, it might be really great. “On those tapes,” Love continues, “are everything from shitty collages to some pretty stunning,… Read more »

Judge: Love Not Crazy

Courtney Love will not be made to undergo a psychiatric examination at the insistence of former Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, a judge ruled Wednesday. Grohl and Novoselic, who along with Love are partners in the business entity Nirvana LLC, filed a motion in the King County Superior Court in Seattle on April 11, asking that Love’s mental state be subject to an evaluation, as pursuant to a clause in the contract they each signed upon forming the company. The provision stated that any partner could request another’s mental heath be evaluated for competency provided there’s proof that… Read more »

Dave Grohl To Courtney Love: Check Your Head

Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic are hoping a judge makes Courtney Love have her head examined. The former Nirvana members and partners in Nirvana LLC, a business entity they established with Love in 1997 to handle such Nirvana-related issues as the release of recordings, filed a motion on April 11 to compel Love to undergo a psychiatric evaluation as part of the two parties’ ongoing dispute over the company, according to a spokesperson for the King County Superior Court in Seattle. When Nirvana LLC was established, a provision was written into the contract that gave any of the partners the… Read more »

Courtney Love Battles Evaluation

A judge in Seattle says he’ll decide in seven to 10 days whether to order Courtney Love to have a psychological examination. Lawyers for Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic want a judge to make Love submit to an evaluation. The two former members of Nirvana have been battling Love over the partnership they formed to administer the Nirvana catalog after Kurt Cobain died.
