Blink-182 Side Project Shoots Video, Plan Shows

Singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge has gone hippie, boy band and even naked for Blink-182 videos, but for the first clip with his new side project, he’s sticking with punk rock. The video for Boxcar Racer’s first single, “I Feel So,” is performance-based with “an old-school punk aesthetic,” according to the band’s MCA Records spokesperson. DeLonge and his bandmates – Blink drummer Travis Barker, Over My Dead Body guitarist Dave Kennedy and bassist Anthony Celestino – filmed the clip on Thursday at a studio in Burbank, California, with director Nathan “Karma” Cox, whose résumé includes videos for Linkin Park and System of… Read more »

Blink-182's Tom DeLonge Salutes His Roots On New Album

Perhaps because it’s so hard to honor someone with a fart joke, Blink-182 singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge has formed a side project called Boxcar Racer to pay tribute to the bands that influenced him. The group, which also includes Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Over My Dead Body guitarist Dave Kennedy, will release its still-untitled debut album on May 14. DeLonge wrote all of the material, played guitar and bass, and sang almost all of the vocals. “This record is directly influenced by the bands that mean the most to me – Fugazi, Refused and, of course, Blink-182,” DeLonge told MTV.… Read more »

Blink-182 Spawn Boxcar Racer

Blink-182 guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker have used the band’s brief downtime to write and record a new record of more experimental material under the name Boxcar Racer. Rhythm guitarist Dave Kennedy, an old pal of DeLonge’s, and formerly of the San Diego straight-edge hardcore outfit Over My Dead Body rounds out the lineup. The side project’s debut is due out in mid-May on Blink’s label, MCA Records, and Blink’s other member, bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus, sings on one track. Boxcar Racer will also tour shortly after the release. The album was recorded at Los Angeles’ Larabee East Studios… Read more »

Bad Religion Ready "Reunion" CD

For certain punks, there was no Bad Religion from 1996 through 2001. During that dark period, co-songwriter Brett Gurewitz split the seminal act he co-created with his pals in high school. He was disenchanted with the band’s major-label deal (at Atlantic), overwhelmed by the sudden hugeness of Epitaph – the label he founded to release Bad Religion records and eventually home to Rancid and the Offspring – and increasingly strung out on smack. The band would release two albums in his absence, both guided solely by the vision of Gurewitz’s estranged collaborator, Greg Graffin. Both records – 1996’s Gray Race… Read more »

Warning! Green Day Busy With Albums, Side Projects

After playing their final U.S. show of the year last week, Green Day are really getting down to work. They’re rehearsing new material for their best-of collection International Superhits, which comes out in the fall. At the same time, they’re fine-tuning a new batch of songs for their next studio album. Meanwhile, when he gets a free moment, bassist Mike Dirnt is finishing up the second record by his side-project, the Frustrators. Who said these guys were just a bunch of snotty, irresponsible punks? “We have a super-serious work ethic,” Dirnt said, an hour before heading to the first of… Read more »

Of course, the track is loaded with bounce and hooks, typically youthful and reflective, “Couldn’t wait for the summer and the Warped tour,” sings singer/bassist Mark Hoppus. “I remember it’s the first time that I saw her there.” The San Diego… Read more »

Blink Wrap "Pants"

“I hope nobody finds out about my rash,” says Mark Hoppus, fresh from putting the finishing touches on Blink-182’s latest album, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, which is due in stores June 12. Hoppus is currently touring Australia with his mates, and, apparently feeling wittier than ever, expects the record to come out a bit differently than their previous efforts. “This album really takes us back to our roots,” he says, “back to a time where we really didn’t know how to sing or play our instruments.” Recorded in San Diego, Take Off Your Pants was produced by Enema… Read more »
