Lance Bass could be going from ‘N Sync to in space. The boy band member is negotiating to travel on a Russian rocket for a mission in November, according to MirCorp, the Amsterdam-based space travel company. Bass said in a statement Wednesday that he was “completely overwhelmed.” “I’m looking forward to completing this lifelong dream,” he said. Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson and *NSYNC’s Lance Bass were among approximately 100 celebrities and everyday heroes that carried the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic torch as it made its way through downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday (January 15). Bass used the torch to ignite a cauldron on the back of a pickup truck. The truck carried the flame from Orange County city Costa Mesa, approximately 50 miles south of Los Angeles, to L.A.’s Olvera Street, where runners resumed the relay. Following the delay of Powerman 5000’s follow-up to Tonight the Stars Revolt, the band’s bass player, Dorian 27 (Dorian Heartsong) and drummer, Al 3 (Alan Pahanish) have left the group. The singers play buddies who try to track down a young woman that Bass’s character falls in love with on Chicago’s “L” train. Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted made his first live appearance with his new band, EchoBrain, on Sunday, playing an hour-long set of heavy yet melodic rock to close out Nadine’s Wild Weekend, a showcase of Bay Area bands. Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh has checked into a psychiatric hospital for treatment of an undisclosed ailment, leaving his bandmates to shoot a video without him, according to band assistant Karl Koch. Static-X bassist Tony Campos sustained a broken collarbone in a motorcycle accident Monday near his Los Angeles home. The accident will sideline him for the first few dates of the band’s stint alongside monumental metallers Pantera and Slayer on the Extreme Steel Tour. Singer Wayne Static, drummer Ken Jay and new guitarist Tripp Eisen will hit the road Wednesday with their bassist providing only backing vocals, according to the group’s manager. Citing “irresponsibility” as the culprit, Zakk Wylde has “sent home” SOB, the bassist in Wylde’s Black Label Society backing band, according to a post on Wylde’s official website (zakkwylde.com). The move comes as this year’s OzzFest, featuring Wylde and company, continues its first week on the road. Filling in temporarily will be former Alice In Chains four-stringer Mike Inez, who also worked with Wylde as part of Ozzy Osbourne’s backing band on 1991’s No More Tears and 1993’s Live & Loud. However, Inez is not a permanent replacement, according to the website. OzzFest arrives Saturday (June 16) in Somerset, Wisconsin.
