Nickelback, Krall Top Juno Awards


Chart-topping modern rock act Nickelback and jazz pianist/vocalist Diana Krall snared three trophies each at Canada’s Juno Awards last night (April 14) in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Nickelback grabbed Junos for best group, best single for “How You Remind Me” and best rock album for “Silver Side Up” (Roadrunner). Krall picked up Junos for best album and best vocal jazz album for “The Look of Love” (Verve), and the best artist honor. The event was broadcast on the nationwide CTV network. Angst-ridden Mancunian rock quartet The Smiths have beaten off competition from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to be declared music bible NME’s most important rock group of the last 50 years. U2 Was Top Concert Money Earner


The rock band U2 had the second biggest tour ever during a year in which concert industry business was off but ticket prices continued to rise, an industry trade publication said Thursday. The top 100 concert tours sold 34.4 million tickets in 2001, down about 7 percent from 37.1 million the year before, according to an analysis by Pollstar magazine. Britney, Mick Jagger, Usher To Play, 'NSYNC To Present At AMAs


Britney Spears, Mick Jagger and Usher are the latest performers who have been added to the 29th annual American Music Awards roster, joining previously announced artists Kid Rock, Lenny Kravitz and Shaggy. P. Diddy, who’ll co-host the show with former MTV personality Jenny McCarthy, will also perform, according to a spokesperson for Dick Clark Productions, Inc. Memphis soul innovator Rufus Thomas dies aged 84


Versatile soul icon Rufus Thomas, a pioneering radio DJ and a singer/songwriter famed for the R&B standard “Walking The Dog,” has died in Memphis at age 84, his family said Sunday. Over a 70-year career, which took off in a segregated minstrel show, Thomas was a key player in the rise of rock ‘n’ roll and soul. He recorded for the two greatest record labels to come out of Memphis, Sun and Stax, and performed into his 80s. EMI sees holiday sales good in Europe, slow in U.S.


EMI Group Plc., the record company whose roster includes the Beatles, Janet Jackson and the Rolling Stones, said Wednesday holiday music sales are looking healthy so far this season in Europe, although still remain sluggish in the U.S. and Japan. The music business has suffered this year particularly in the United States amid a weakening economy, exacerbated by the Sept. 11 attacks.
