Apple Computer Inc. launched its highly anticipated iTunes Music Store in Europe on Tuesday, expanding the popular digital music service to users in Britain, France and Germany. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said iTunes would be available without subscription. The charge for downloading a single track would be 79 pence ($1.43) in the United Kingdom and 99 euro cents ($1.20) in Germany and France. Jobs boasted that more than 85 million songs have been downloaded from iTunes in the United States. An 18th-century Italian-made violin reported missing earlier this week was found in an alleyway near the Manhattan bar where its owner had left it, police said. Odin Rathnam, the first-chair violinist for the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, had been in New York for a meeting and left the violin, along with a borrowed viola, at Yogi’s bar on the Upper West Side. The violin, valued at about $95,000, was made by Bartolomeo Calvaros of Bergamo, Italy, between 1750 and 1755; the viola belonged to a friend. The band whose pyrotechnics sparked a nightclub fire that killed 100 people distanced itself from the re-release of an album and its title – “Burning House of Love.” A manager and a lawyer for the 1980s rock band Great White said the CD is an unauthorized release and the title is in bad taste. The fire at The Station nightclub in West Warwick began Feb. 20, 2003, when the band’s pyrotechnics ignited flammable foam placed near the stage as soundproofing.
