April fools were on the loose at the kick-off date of the Sum Like It Hot Tour Monday night at the Electric Factory. At the head of the parade was Deryck Whibley, who led his band, Sum41, in an hour’s worth of snotty punk rock, heavy metal reverence and irreverent shtick. On Tuesday, Nappy Roots spent the first part of their day performing free of charge for sixth- and eighth-grade assemblies at Middle School 52 in the Bronx. Later that night, it was all about the Benjamins as they opened for Sugar Ray at Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom. Ozzy Osbourne, System of a Down, P.O.D. and the new band featuring former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell and Rage Against the Machine members Tim Commerford, Tom Morello and Brad Wilk are among the groups slated to take the main stage when this summer’s Ozzfest kicks off on July 6, Ozzy’s manager/wife, Sharon Osbourne, told MTV News on Tuesday. Pop kingpin Billy Joel is working on two new projects, and he doesn’t have to sing a note or plink a piano key for either one. The first is a classical piano album of new songs, which is being arranged by established concert pianist Hyung-ki Joo. On June 25, Joel will travel to Vienna, Austria, to supervise the project, which he hopes to have available for release by the fall. ‘NSYNC have found themselves in a pickle. The group’s forthcoming album, Celebrity, has been shelved until mid summer.
