The hitmaking remix/production team of Barry Harris and Chris Cox, collectively known as Thunderpuss, added an impressive name to their client roster when Madonna tapped them for a megamix of her greatest hits earlier this year. The duo completed a “Thunderpuss GHV2 Megamix” for her, which was released on a promotional-only basis to radio in support of the release of her greatest-hits package, GHV2: Greatest Hits Volume 2. The set, which showcases the pop icon’s work from 1991 through 2001, has sold more than 300,000 copies in its first two weeks of release. Madonna joined a growing list of artists… Read more »

Mya To Take Role In 'Chicago' Movie

Mya stays slumming when picking out her girlfriends, at least on screen. After spending time with Lil’ Kim, Pink and Christina Aguilera, playing ladies of the evening in the video for “Lady Marmalade,” she’s now set to hang with a murderer. The singer is currently in Toronto rehearsing with leading ladies Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger for her role in the big-screen adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical “Chicago.” Filming for the Miramax project starts in January, with Mya playing a vixen named Mona. The original version of “Chicago” centers around two 1920s entertainers who get involved in homicide. Besides… Read more »

MTV Makes Mark in Enemy Camp

While Ali G was insulting German celebrities in a naff bit of hosting in the country’s financial capital, many people were wondering why MTV had selected the less than musical city on the Main for this year’s event. Was it for the internet address, MTV.de, which was held by a local transit company until MTV announced that it had decided to come to Frankfurt? More probable is that the music television pioneer was trying to boost its visibility in Europe’s largest media market, a place where the locals are, in US parlance, kicking its ass. Viva Media, which is listed… Read more »

Jay-Z's 'Blueprint' Tops Pop Charts Again

Rapper-entrepreneur Jay-Z settled in at the top of the heap in this week’s charts, but sales for all of the top performers ebbed from last week’s levels amid a general retail malaise nationwide. “Blueprint” (Def Jam) claimed the No. 1 spot with just under 174,000 units sold during the week ended Sept. 30, SoundScan reports indicated Wednesday. That’s down 36% from the album’s prior outing, but still good enough to put it within a week’s sales of platinum territory after less than a month inthe running. Holding strong at No. 2 was J Records’ Alicia Keys, who won raves for… Read more »

Stars leaving egos at home for the Emmys

The Emmys, television’s highest honors, will be presented belatedly Sunday under the cloud of the Sept. 11 attacks with many stars planning to bypass strutting down the red carpet and to leave their egos and low-cut dresses at home. “It’s an awkward time for everybody, and people are still feeling unsure about whether it’s the right time or not,” said veteran Hollywood publicist Heidi Schaeffer. “People aren’t looking to call attention to themselves right now.” Reflecting the Emmys’ subdued tone this year, many stars have decided to forego the ceremony’s red-carpet arrival, among them nominees Martin Sheen of “The West… Read more »

Fatboy Slim Dominate MTV Video Awards

Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice” shot up the competition by bringing home six “Moon Man” trophies – including breakthrough video and best direction – Thursday night during the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. But “Weapon of Choice,” directed by Spike Jonze and featuring Christopher Walken dancing up a hotel’s walls, was shut out of the prestigious video of the year prize, which went to Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink for “Lady Marmalade.” Last year’s big winners ‘N Sync walked away with four trophies for “Pop,” including the coveted Viewer’s Choice… Read more »

Review: Blink-182, Take Off Your Pants And Jacket

You can dismiss Blink-182 as cartoons if you like. They’re certainly not going to stop you. They even call their new album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket: Say it out loud, let your inner eighth-grader savor the cadence of the phrase. It sums up Blink-182’s wiseass brat-punk ethos almost as well as their recent live album, The Mark, Tom and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back), which featured the butt-stupidest stage banter since Kiss’ Alive! (Mark: “You can leave now and beat the traffic!” Tom: “Or you can stay and beat your meat!” – and they get paid for… Read more »

A Flashy Night For Movie Stars

Stars figured they could say and do just about anything at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards on Saturday night. “And I’m gonna,” presenter Halle Berry predicted two hours before she took the stage with her Swordfish co-stars, John Travolta and Hugh Jackman. Playing off the rumor (which she later denied) that she received an extra $500,000 to show her breasts in her upcoming action movie, Berry encouraged the two men to show a body part. Then she patted their buns as they playfully unbuttoned their jackets in striptease fashion. It was all part of the fun that took place at… Read more »
