Indies aim to grab share of online sales


Independent record labels behind artists like The White Stripes, Deep Purple and Arctic Monkeys announced a global deal Saturday to pool access to their catalogs, seeking to grab a bigger share of online music sales from the major record companies. Download Deals Play Music Videos


Los Angeles – Fans will be able to build libraries of their favorite music videos because of deals set to be announced Wednesday (March 16) involving digital entertainment companies CinemaNow and MediaPass Network. CinemaNow announced agreements with Warner Music Group, Epitaph Records and TVT Records to sell music videos on a download-to-own basis. This marks the first time music videos will be made available specifically for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile-based secure devices, a category that includes Portable Media Centers, Pocket PCs and Smartphones from many different manufacturers. Rancid Album Won't Mention Warner Bros. Name


In a move likely designed to appeal to fans disappointed by indie punk band Rancid’s switch to Warner Bros., the group’s new album will not carry any mention of the label’s name. The veteran act has left its long-time home of Hellcat/Epitaph Records for the release of its forthcoming album, “Indestructible,” due Aug. 26. Clash star Joe Strummer dies


Joe Strummer, lead singer for seminal British punk band the Clash, has died at the age of 50. Strummer, who was the band’s guitarist, vocalist and songwriter alongside Mick Jones, died on Sunday at his farmhouse in Somerset, southwestern England. A statement released by his record label said Strummer “died peacefully at his home.” It added that his wife Lucy, two daughters and stepdaughter “request privacy at this harrowing time.” He had been touring with his most recent band The Mescaleros until last month, rounding off a tour in Liverpool. Vans, Pennywise Singer Form Record Label


Footwear company Vans Inc. is making one more giant leap into the music business, teaming up with Pennywise punk rocker Jim Lindberg to form Vans Records, a label that will mine the lucrative skateboard, snowboard and surf culture. Pennywise To Gig In The Midwest In January


Pennywise will bring its brand of punk rock to the Midwest next month, beginning January 16 in Columbus, Ohio. The Southern California group has a half-dozen dates currently on the itinerary, all to also feature the Deviates and Boy Sets Fire.
